Don't Step On Ants
Gil Grissom and his wife Sara sat with their son Ryan in the park. They were waiting for all their friends and family to come to celebrate Ryan's 4th birthday. All of a sudden Ryan jumped down from his spot on the bench and started jumping on an ant hill.
"Look daddy I'm squishing the ants," Ryan proudly announced still jumping on the ant hill.
"Ryan, stop that right now!!!" Grissom yelled picking up his son and caring him over to the table.
"Why?" Ryan asked confused.
Sara just sat across the table from them with an amused smirk on her face. She knew that Ryan was in for a long speech about ants.
"Well Ryan, you see ants are very important creatures because they move soil to help nutrient cycling. Ants are from the family Formicidae, and are related to wasps and bees. That ant hill you just destroyed held worker ants, soldier ants, drones, and queens. Ant societies have division of labor they have the ability to solve complex problems. Ants have been called Earth's most successful species and have been around for more than 100 million years. There are about 20,000 different species of ants all around the world. Some people eat, and make medication with the ants which is another reason why you shouldn't hurt them. I don't know if you know this but ants are made up of three main parts, the head, the trunk, and the rear metasoma. Their six legs are attached to the trunk. The head holds the jaws, eyes, and antennae. The antennae help them smell, touch, taste, and hear. The metasoma contains the stomach. Some species of ants have poison sacks or stingers attached at the end of the metasoma for defense. Ants do not have lungs. Oxygen enters through tiny holes all over the body and Carbon Dioxide leaves through the same holes. There are no blood vessels. The heart is a long tube that pumps colorless blood from the head back to the rear and then back up to the head again. The blood kind of coats the insides of the ants and is then sucked into the tube and pumped up to the head again. The nervous system of ants consists of a long nerve cord that also runs from head to rear with branches leading to the parts of the body, kind of like a human spinal cord. And son, last but not least ant communicate with their antennae, they touch each other, or they use chemicals called pheromones to leave scent trials for other ants to follow. Do you understand why ants are good now Ryan?" Grissom asked looking into the confused face of his 4 year old son.
Ryan looked at his mom, who was now laughing hysterically at his face, for help.
"Honey, what daddy is trying to say is…don't step on ants, because if you step on ants it will rain and ruin your party," Sara said smiling.
"Oh, ok mommy can I go play on the swings now?" Ryan asked with puppy dog eyes.
"Go ahead, but make sure to keep a look out for your guests," Sara told him as he ran off towards the swings.
"Don't step on ants because it will make it rain?" Grissom said confusion coloring his tone.
"Yea that's what my grandfather told me when I was younger," Sara said as she finished setting up for the party.
"I still like my explanation better," Grissom mumbled under his breath as he got up to help his wife.
