Author's Note 2015: I wrote this story 6 years ago. I was in High School at the time and obsessed with Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. This was just one of the many scenarios that ran through my head at the time. I am editing this story but I am not deleting it and publishing again, rather I am just fleshing it out a bit more. There will be no major plot changes. This first half of this chapter is almost straight from the show. This was originally two chapters but I realized that the lengths of the chapters were really irritating and that most finished before they even started. The new chapters are still relatively short and the story itself will become a few chapters shorter than the original but this was never intended to be a long fic.
Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters depicted in this story. The rights belong to NBC and Dick Wolf. I am making no monetary gain from the publication of this Fan Fiction. I am only using the characters, as well as the setting of this story for fun.
Olivia stared through the windows in the door that led into the 1-6 bullpen. It was mostly empty except for a few rookies who were laughing near the windows and a blonde woman who was sitting at the desk that had been Olivia's before she had gone undercover for the FBI. Olivia knew when she accepted the assignment that somebody would be brought in to replace her, at least temporarily, but seeing another person in her desk left her with a strange feeling. Actually, just being back left her feeling as if things had changed and the truth was that they had. Olivia herself had changed, as a person and a police officer. Realising that staring wasn't going to get her anywhere, Olivia sighed and made her way into the bullpen towards the blonde woman.
"Hi, I'm looking for Detective Stabler."
The woman looked up and surveyed Olivia for a few moments before answering. "No he's busy in an interrogation. But maybe I could help you. I'm his partner, Dani Beck."
His partner? It took Olivia a few seconds to comprehend what the woman had said. She knew she was being irrational but deep down the sound of somebody else introducing themselves as Elliot's partner bugged her. "Um, no thanks," Olivia replied before glancing over at the Captain's office, "is the captain in his office?'
"Sure," Dani gave Olivia one last glance before turning back to the paperwork in front of her.
As Olivia walked towards the Captain's office, Dani found herself wondering who exactly she was. Olivia had seemed very comfortable in her surroundings and in Dani's experience very few people were that comfortable in a police station of any sort. Her immediate thought was that she was a victim wanting an update on her case or perhaps a victim whose case had been closed and had just come by to say hello.
Don was in the middle of paperwork. Being captain was something that Don had spent many years working towards and he had been very pleased when his work had paid off and he had been named captain of the New York Special Victims Unit. The amount of paper work he had to do however, sometimes had him wishing, for a just a second, that he could go back to a job where he could spend more time in the field.
Glancing at the clock, Don saw that his day wasn't even half over and there was certainly enough paperwork to keep him busy for the rest of his shift. As he tried to refocus his thoughts on the current document related to some arbitrary policy change for the hiring of new detectives, there was a knock at his door.
"Come in," Don said glad for the interruption and when the door opened to reveled Olivia he stood up in shock. It took a few seconds for Don to find his voice but when he did, he said, "Olivia. When did you get back?"
"A couple of days ago."
A couple of days ago? She had been back for a couple of days and she had only come to visit now. Don pushed aside the thoughts and refocused his attention to Olivia. "And 1pp forgot to notify me. I'm sorry Olivia I don't have a spot for you. They sent someone to partner with Elliot."
Olivia looked over at the Captain before turning to stare out the window at Elliot's partner.
"I know. We met. How's she working out?"
"Okay now. She had a bit of trouble in the beginning but now she seems to be okay. Give me a week to ship her out and you can come back."
Don looked over at Olivia and noticed that she was still looking out the window. Her shoulders had sagged a bit and Don craned his neck to see what she was looking at that had upset her.
"Um no that's okay I actually came here to tell you that I am not ready to come back yet."
Her statement would have confused Don if he had not figured out what she was so upset about. Elliot was sitting on the edge of Dani's desk. They looked a little too close. Elliot was touching her. Don looked back at Olivia trying to read her face. She looked a little jealous.
Not waiting for a reply, Olivia headed towards the door on the other side of the office. The door that did not lead to the bullpen and instead led into the corridor that would take her in the opposite direction from her former partner.
"Don't you want to say hi to Elliot?" Don asked.
"No, its okay he is busy. I'll talk to him later."
"Look Fin and Munch probably want to see you. Just go and say hello," Don prompted hoping to get Olivia to confront whatever was going on between her and Elliot before it turned into a mess, one that he would probably end up having to deal with.
"Fine."
Elliot walked into the squad room a few minutes after Olivia had gone into the Captain's office and immediately went over to Dani where he took a seat on the edge of the desk. He had done the same thing many times over the years when it had been Olivia sitting in the seat. Pushing all thoughts of her out of his head, Elliot turned his focus to his new partner.
"What happened in there?"
"I don't know he got on my nerves," Dani looked up to meet Elliot's gaze.
"You need to be careful. Special Vic's is not like other squads. We deal with live victims. We deal with traumatized kids. I know it's difficult but it gets easier to deal with over time. I'm not saying that you will ever be able to accept it but to work in Special Vic's you need to know how to control your emotions."
"If you say so," Dani responded obviously trying to change the subject, "A woman was in here looking for you while you were busy."
"What did she want?"
"She never said, she just asked if you were around."
"What's her name?"
"I never asked her."
"Oh okay. How long ago was this?"
"About five minutes. She went to see the Captain so she may still be in there."
Elliot got up from his perch on the edge of Dani's desk and walked over to his desk. He glanced back at the captain's office but couldn't see anything through the partially closed blinds. Before Elliot could spend too much time pondering who might have been looking for him, John and Fin entered the squad room in the middle of one of their usual squabbled. Elliot didn't pay much attention figuring it was probably about one of John's conspiracy theories, instead turning his attention to the mountain of paper work that seemed to have doubled in the short time it had taken him to do his last interrogation. Deciding that it would be easier to start on the paperwork if it were in some sort of order, Elliot quickly worked his way through the papers diving them into piles of importance. At the bottom of the pile he found the envelope that contained the unsigned divorce papers that Kathy's lawyer had served him. Deciding that now was not the time to get distracted by his personal problems, Elliot quickly put the envelope in one of his drawers so that it wouldn't get mixed up with the rest of his papers again.
"Elliot what do you think man?" Fin asked turning towards Elliot and getting his attention.
Elliot blinked and turned his head towards where Fin and Much were standing. "What?" He asked, hoping that one of them would fill him in on what they wanted his opinion on in as few words as possible.
Fin was the one that responded first, "Wake up man. John says that the Fed's have something against SVU. I disagree; I think that we just catch the wrong cases."
Elliot thought about it for a minute before answering, "Well do you remember that case from last year where the man who had kidnapped three little girls died from Anthrax?"
"Yeah the FED'S cleaned us out and took everything and told us that our part in the investigation was over and then they got so mad when someone leaked the story to the press," Munch replied looking pointedly at Elliot when he said someone.
"Hey it wasn't me, it was Liv," Elliot replied defensively.
Throughout the conversation between the three men, Dani had begun to feel awkward. She hadn't been here when they had, had that case. She hated hearing stories from back in the days when Elliot and Olivia were working together. It made her feel completely out of place, as if she wasn't really part of the team.
"I can't believe that Liv is a FED now. After all the trouble we have had with them," John muttered.
Meanwhile Olivia and the Captain had come out of his office and were standing listening to the conversation unnoticed.
"She's working undercover for them, she is not one of them," Elliot immediately jumped to Olivia's defense.
"I wonder if she's enjoying working with the FED'S. What do Eco-Terrorists do when they are not causing or in the middle of a protest?" Fin questioned out loud.
"I know…" John began to offer a conspiracy theory that probably could have gone on for a good few minutes but before he could continue he was interrupted.
"They plan their next protest and they weren't terrorists," Olivia jumped in to save John from making a fool of himself and boring everybody with in hearing distance absolute crazy.
