Disclaimer: I don't own Ghost Hunt. If I did, you don't even want to know what awful things Yasuhara and Madako would cook up together.
"What is it, do you think?" the small girl asked quietly. Normally the words would be bitter or filled with venom, but with the cover of night her true awe-stricken tone seeped into her voice as genuine curiosity took hold.
"What do you mean?" The usually silent man indulged. The girl looked back towards the doorway and spoke again.
"He is willing to die for her, and she for him, and yet neither one has done anything about it." The tall man nodded along to her words and thought about them for a moment before responding.
"Sometimes words aren't needed." The girl shakes her head and a burst of energy flies into her words.
"That's not true for them. They need the words, but they always seem to use the wrong ones."
Silence reigned throughout the night again as the dark man's words failed him. The small girl looked at him for the first time since she had spoken in soft tones, a look full of expectations. A look that demanded answers.
"Why do you even worry yourself with their affairs?" He asked after a moment. The spark that was constantly lit in her eyes dimmed, and an emptiness filled them.
"Mai...She's strong-headed, and idiotic, and selfless." her words were quieter now, the volume having left with the fire inside of her. The man could now understand why so many people spoke of her as if she was made of porcelain. Most people saw her this way, the Masako of television. Only the small group of paranormal detectives ever saw more, were ever shown more, trusted with more.
Sadness crept into her face as she continued speaking. "Naru, he's willing to use his powers to protect Mai, even if it means he may die. He's willing to jump on top of her when the ceiling caves in, or fall down a sewer with her. Naru will always be the first to protect Mai when she is in danger." The dark man nods once more, knowing all of this and more to be true of his young charge. There is another pause before the doll-like girl spoke in a breathy whisper, as if the words themselves were foul tasting.
"But Mai just keeps throwing herself into the path of danger so that none of us will. And Naru knows that she'll never stop. So what happens when he isn't there to protect her?"
A soft shuffling from the door is heard and the two turn to look at the small, teary-eyed brunette standing at the doorway.
"Masako-" Before the word is even fully out of her mouth the other girl is on her feet shuffling towards her friend. Her hands rest firmly on her shoulder and concern is evident in her voice.
"Mai. What's happened?" Mai just shook her head and threw herself onto the smaller girl's shoulders. She stutters out a broken explanation of the dream she had just been forced into while Masako leads her down the hall and presumably into the kitchen for some tea,
Lin chuckles to himself and turns back to his work.
"Naru isn't the only one willing to protect this family, Masako."
