CHAPTER ONE

I crouch low to the ground and quietly watch the dead, rotted corpse of a cop, from behind the broke down station wagon. I watch as he limps around, his lower jaw almost hanging off, one arm missing and blood everywhere.

I can tell he could smell me, with him walking back and forth, he just can't find me. I slowly get up and step around the back of the car that I was hiding beside carefully stepping over the broken glass and creep up behind the corpse.

I slowly unclip my long knife and hold it tightly and before he can turn around, I run up behind him and ram my knife into the back of his skull. I found out early on that it had to be the brain, they don't stay dead otherwise. I hurry and unbuckle his belt, seeing as how I need a gun, noise attracts the corpses but knifes and bats can't keep you safe from the living.

I run back and pick up the duffle bag of supplies, that I scavenge from the abandon apartments around my own and I make my way back to my apartment, before any more corpses came walking into the apartment complex.

I look around once more before running up the stairs and knocking four times, then three times on my door. When Jack opens the door, I quickly walk in and shut and lock the door behind me. I turn and stare at Jack for a second before dropping the duffle bag and taking off the heavy back pack.

"We need to leave soon, I keep seeing more and more of those things out there." I whisper not wanting the girls to hear me. "Ok, when?" He asks looking scared while taking the duffle bag from me. "In the next few days, tomorrow morning we will start packing up everything and get it all into the car. But for now, get some sleep ok." I said before hugging him and then I make my way down the hall to my room.

I pass the spare bedroom and I look in to see that the girls are all asleep. I walk into my room and shut the door behind me and I take off my bloody, dirty clothes and grab some clean clothes from the bag by the door.

I sit down on my bed and fall back and stare up at the ceiling while going over everything that I need to do to keep them safe and I close my eyes falling to sleep.

"Hey Gwen." I said yawning after answering my phone. "Hello Emily, you know I hate to ask and I know you have work but can you watch the girls, Karen is sick and they just called me in for a shift." She said and I can hear the girls giggling in the background.

"Yeah, it's fine, you know Mr. Andrew doesn't mind them being there." I tell her as I sit up and push the covers off. "Thank you so much, I'll see you in a bit bye." And before I can say anything she hangs up. "Bye." I said to myself before hanging up and toss the phone on the bed. I get up and walk over to my dresser to get ready for a long day.

After strapping in both Haylee and Gracie into their car seats, I close the door and turn around just to see a very happy Anna running up to me. "Hey Emily! I can't wait to go to the movie tomorrow. I wanted to see this movie, for like forever." She said bouncing in a hyper way.

"Whoa slow down." I said seeing as how I barley understand what she said. "I can't wait either, I promised we would see it now didn't I. Now go before you miss the bus." I tell her while pointing over to her friends, who were waiting for her.

"Bye, I'll tell mom you said hi ok." She said before running off. "Oh Anna, tell Jack he has work tomorrow." I yell to her. "Ok." she yells over her shoulder. I shake my head, I'll call him after work, knowing she won't remember. I watched as she catches up to her friends before getting in the car to go to work.

Pain, burning pain is all I can feel when I open my eyes. My eyes are blurry from the agony of it and they won't focus. My side feels like it's on fire, well at least I'm not dead yet. When my eyes finally focus I look around the tent that I'm in, seeing that it is empty except for me and a few bags.

I can hear people moving around outside and two men talking, ok where the hell am I and where are the kids. Hearing the zipper open, I look up to see a women walking in with bright red hair. "Oh you're finally awake, I'm Tonya. Do you some want water and some pain meds?" She asks holding up a water bottle and pill bottle. "Yes please and where are my kids?" I ask her, my throat a little scratchy.

"Oh they're ok don't worry, the two little ones are taking a nap and the other two are eating some lunch. I'll go get them after I look at your stomach ok." She said helping me lify my head up a little to take a drink of the water and the pain pills. 'Ok' is all that I could say after that with the feeling of the cool water run down my throat.

She grabs the first aid bag that I got from Gwen's and drags it towards her. "It's a good thing you had this bag, it saved your life." She tells me as she takes off the blood soaked bandages. "Good, it's not as red as it was yesterday and it has stopped bleeding." She said as she cleans and rewraps my stomach and side."You lost a bit blood, so you're gonna have to take a few days to rest ok." she said pulling my shirt back down. "Not to sound ungrateful, but can I see my kids now?" I ask and she just smiles and says 'of course' before leaving the tent.

"Emily!" Jack said looking just as relieved as I was to see him. He walks into the tent and over to me with Anna close behind him. Anna hurries to my side and sits down reaching for my hand, which I hold back on to just as tight.

I looked up at Jack to see him pacing the small tent. "I didn't know what to do you were bleeding…" "Jack." "My head hurt, the girls were crying…" "Jack." "Then I almost ran over Glenn …" "JACK!" I yell finally getting his attention.

"It's ok, I'm fine the girls are fine. You did what you had to do." I said looking at him still pacing and mumbling to himself. Knowing he won't be stopping any time soon, I turn my head and look at Anna. I let go of her hand and reach up for her chin.

"Look at me, look at me Anna. I'm so proud of you and you are so strong and brave." She nods and I can see tearswelling up in her eyes and she lays next to me and rests her head on my shoulder and grabs a hold onto my arm. I can feel her sobbing as I look at Jack who was just standing there looking at her.

"She hasn't done anything but sit there since we been here, it has been two days Emily, first time I've seen her do anything since then." He said quietly not taking his eyes off of her. "She's just in shock, I think we all are. The girls ok?" I ask not fully trusting Tonya yet. "Oh yeah they're fine. Some of the women have been helping, I didn't really know what to do." He tells me whipping his eyes from stray tears.

"It's good here, there is a lot of people. It's like a camp, it's a good place." He said trying to reassure me. "Good ok. I'm going to sleep now, the meds are kicking in." I said but some of my words were a bit slurred. "Ok I'll see you in the morning, come on Anna." He said reaching for her hand.

She just lays there but thankfully she finally stopped crying. "She's fine, she can stay." I said closing my eyes. "You sure?" I can hear him ask as he unzips the tent. "Yeah." I whisper turning my head and resting it on hers.

Man I bored, seeing as it has been a week since I first woke up here. "I'm so ready to get out of this tent." I said as Jack and a nice quiet woman, Carol, who has been helping me with Haylee and Gracie, help me up. When I'm finally standing upright, I get a little dizzy but I'm not going to tell them that, I want out of this damn tent.

As I step out of the tent I can see Haylee waiting there, she was bouncing where she stood. "Come on Emmy, I wan ya to meet my new fremds."She said swinging our hands as she leads us somewhere. "Friends, honey bear." I said looking down at her smiling face. "Frends."She said back looking up at me with her big doe eyes. "Close enough." i said smiling down at her which she returns.

She then runs off to a small group of kid's, two boys and two girls, all over the age of six but they are letting her play with them anyway, that's good at least she has someone to play with.

"You ready to meet everyone, their all sure ready to meet the bloody woman that just showed up." Jack teases as he stands next to me so I won't fall. I was about to reply when a man walks up holding a shot gun flung over his shoulder.

"Hello, my name is Shane Walsh. Glad to see you up and moving around." He said holding his hand out for me to shake, which I did. "I'm Emily DeLuca and I am very happy as well." I said giving him a small smile.

"Let me introduce you to everyone, how does that sound." and before I can even answer him. "This here is Lori and her son Carl, and over by the RV are Dale and Jim. And over there is…" And like he said he introduced me to almost every single person in camp.

We were walking back towards my tent when we pass a man sitting outside, I guess his tent, drinking some beer. "Well hey there sugar tits, haven't seen you around here before." The man say which makes Shane stop and looked annoyed at this man. "This here is Merle Dixon, his brother, daryl is out hunting right now. I would stay away from the likes of them." After Shane says this, Merle stands up looking furious. "What the hell you say you fu…"

"It's nice to meet you Merle, I hope you both understand I'm still weak from the blood loss. I'm going to go back to my tent and get some rest. You both have a nice day." I interrupt before a fight brakes out. I turn and walk away and over to Carol who is holding a fussy Gracie, with Haylee next to her who was falling asleep where she was sitting.

"You guys ready for bed?" I ask when Haylee nod her head yes slowly looking so tired. I help her up and with Carols help we changed them and put them in my expedition where they have been sleeping, i think its safer.

After thanking her, I walk to my tent that I have been sharing with Jack and Anna. It is right next to my SUV, which is right by the RV where Dale, Andrea and Amy are staying. I walk in and zip the door close and after taking my shoes off, I carefully use a fold out chair to sit down next to an already sleeping Anna, hopefully no nightmares will plague us tonight.
