Mai did not mean for it to happen.
In fact, she wished with all her shattered heart that it had not happened. She had worked so hard her whole life to rid herself of any weakness. Then Joey Wheeler came waltzing in, and all that went out the window.
She thought she knew what it felt like to not have her love returned when Joey began preferring his friends' company to her own. But that was just him wanting to play Duel Monsters with his friends. It faded when he, as all children inevitably did, wanted stability and something besides being close friends.
And Mai felt his love again. She shared him now, but she no longer feared losing him.
What she feared now, was that her heart had betrayed her once again. For now, she found herself falling for Joey, who most decidedly did not return the feelings.
And Mai did not know if she could take the rejection.
