because people cope in different ways

James gets home late and he really doesn't want to stay up any longer, he really doesn't want the chance to see more of what he should be and what he could be and what they want him to be.

He doesn't want to open the door and find his sister passed out on the couch or his brother screaming from the pain and the nightmares.

He doesn't want to see what his siblings become at night, he doesn't want to see how they cope because he knows that he will be urged to do the same.

He really doesn't want to go to sleep, not when he sees Lily's mane peeking from beneath a pillow, not when he hears Albus whimpering in his sleep as he goes through his nightly terror.

He knows he'll regret this later, he knows that he's making a mistake, he knows that he'll pay the price in the morning.

James Potter knows a lot of things and James Potter doesn't want a lot of things of things but James Potter can't seem to care anymore.

James Potter can't seem to care when he drives the knife into his wrists, he can't seem to care when it begins to hurt a lot more than it should, he can't seem to care when he begins to black out, and he can't seem to care when he fades away.

James Potter can't seem to care anymore.
