Well, a James/Lily story for you all, even though it's pretty short, and not terribly fluffy.
"Lily! Oh, Lily!"
Lily Evans looked up from where she sat at the Gryffindor table with the Marauders- Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black and her boyfriend (after he'd considerably deflated his overlarge ego) James Potter- and her friends Mary Macdonald and Dorcas Meadowes.
Their other friend Alice Prewett was practically bouncing over to them, a letter clutched tightly in her fist as she waved it about. "Guess what?"
"Let's see… I'm guessing you've got some good reason for being almost half an hour late to breakfast?"
"Well, I may have run into Frank on my way here,"
"May have? Please," Sirius interrupted her, "Your hair's mussed and you're out of breath. Clearly, you've been snogging."
"And maybe not even just snogging," Dorcas muttered gleefully, winking at Alice in a rather obvious manner.
Alice flushed, but continued on as if her friends hadn't spoken, "-but that's not the point! I got a letter from Marlene!"
Marlene McKinnon was their friend that had graduated from Hogwarts the previous year, and gotten married in the late summer right before the rest of the group had returned to Hogwarts.
"And?" Mary pressed.
"She's having a baby!"
"That's great!" Dorcas enthused, "She and… oh, I can never remember her husband's name."
Everyone glanced around at each other, trying to find out if at least someone knew what their friend's husband was called.
"Ah, it doesn't really matter anyway," Sirius cut in, "He was in Hufflepuff."
Lily was torn between giggling and looking scandalized. She opted for a stifled laugh that sounded more like a cough.
James was looking at her out of the corner of his eye with a smirk on his face. So maybe it hadn't sounded completely like a cough…
"Well, Marlene and… him... must be so pleased," Dorcas finished, grimacing slightly as she mentioned their friend's seemingly nameless husband.
"Does she know if it's a boy or a girl?" Remus asked quietly.
"Not yet," Alice replied, consulting the letter, "But if it's a girl she wants to name her Beatrice, and Hamish if it's a boy."
"Those are terrible names!" Lily found herself accidentally saying, as she hadn't meant to say it aloud.
James raised an eyebrow at her. "Really?"
"What?" Lily frowned, defensive. She hardly noticed when the others at the table shot each other amused looks and got up to go to their lessons, leaving them to their conversation.
"You don't like those names?"
"No." Lily said shortly. "They're way too… pompous for my liking."
"I would have thought you'd name your kid something pompous, like... like 'Nicholas De Mimsy Porpington'," he grinned, ruffling his hair and glancing sheepishly at the ghost floating by, adding, "No offense, Nick."
"None taken, Mister Potter," Nearly-Headless Nick said demurely as he drifted past. He could never really take offense against any Gryffindor.
"I think 'James' is much more pompous than that," Lily said, flashing him a pointed glare.
James noticed that it didn't hold any real venom, so he continued on, "So you'd name your child James, then?"
"No," Lily smiled slyly, shaking her head, "I'm not really much for naming a child after his father. Well, later, Potter." With that, she winked, then stood and walked away.
James stared after her in amazement for a moment before it finally dawned on him. "Wait...Lily!"
I hope you enjoyed my random plot bunny that I managed to capture before it could run amok :D Review? You know you want to! ~Lily
