So, without further ado...

Kitty stood at the pentacle, sweating slightly. Her throat was parched, but she was determined. This was the moment… Slowly and carefully, she started the incantation to summon djinn…

After the… the incident, she had got an award and a whole load of cash from the new Government. They were willing to even install a statue of her next to Gladstone and… she refused to speak his name. How could he even think of going back on his promise the way he did!

Hoping a journey would calm her and help her overcome… his death, she had voyaged around the world. Ah, the wonders she had seen! The Leaning Tower, the Colosseum, the Eiffel tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall and… Egypt. But she could never get over the feeling that some part of her was missing, and everywhere she went, she imagined him commenting on everything…

Bartimaeus too. When she stood near the Pyramids, she imagined Bartimaeus overseeing the imps, never doing the dirty work himself… It almost brought a smile to her face. The Sphinx looked ahead, with her broken nose and calm look on her face…

She had looked for any loophole, researched through the vast libraries of Alexandria, met the great magicians of the past… questioned the fakirs of India and the descendants of the Shamans of America, but there was no way for him to be alive.

"The release of such potent power would have definitely destroyed any human who was near," they said. "Any djinn would have died as well."

There was only one hope- he had dismissed Bartimaeus. Then, at least Bartimaeus would have lived… She would have never expected it of Mandrake, but the last time she had seen, there was some grudging respect between them.

And so she had decided. She would try to summon Bartimaeus. She had tried three months back, but he had not come. The sadness that enveloped her allowed no place for thought, but then she reached for that faint glimmer of hope- Bartimaeus might have been summoned by a different magician.

After she spoke the final incantation and counted the seconds it would take, she braced herself for the worst. But something was definitely happening! The wind in the middle of the pentacle swirled round and round, slow at first, but then like a tornado, odious smells were emitted, and in a flash of light she saw an Egyptian boy standing. His mouth widened in surprise, as Kitty said "Hi, Bartimaeus"
