Hi everyone, this is my first story, so please be kind.
1989, Las Vegas, Nevada
Lily spotted him sitting against a tree in the park reading a book, his glasses almost falling off his face as he read with enthusiasm. She skipped over to him and smiled. "Hey Spencer!" she yelled.
He jumped, make her giggle. "Hi Lily." He said as he straightened himself up and closing his book.
Lily sat down next to him and leant on his shoulder. "So, Spence."
"So, Lils," he mimicked with ease. "What do you want now?"
"Must I have a reason to talk to my very best friend?"
"Yes, you must," he said with a lazy smile, "shoot."
"I was just thinking...I haven't been, you know, I've been distant lately."
"Yes," Spencer said, "you have been. You look awful."
"I have to tell you something." she mumbled
"Do you?" he teased.
She sat up straight and turned to him. "This is serious Spencer. Just listen, and don't interrupt me. Ok?"
"Lily..."
"Just listen."
"Ok"
Lily smiled sadly. "Dad wants to move."
"WHAT?" Spencer eyes went wide, filling with shock.
"It's for my treatment. Grace Mercy West Hospital in Seattle has a program that might help with my cancer."
"Oh…" Spencer could feel the tears threating to fall. "When?"
"Thursday."
"It's… It is Tuesday today Lils."
"It will only be for a bit though. When I'm better we will come back." Lily said grabbing his hand. "I promise."
Spencer pulled her into a hug, both of them were crying now.
"SPENCER!?" a voice called in the distance.
"That's my mum" He whispered.
"You have to go."
"I'll miss you Lils."
"I will miss you to Spence" She cried, hugging her best friend close. "I'll be back before you know it."
"SPENCER! COME ON! WE ARE LEAVING NOW!" His mum called.
"I have to go." He hiccupped
"Bye Spence."
He stood up, grabbing his book. He look down at his best friend and smiled sadly. "Bye Lils."
He started to run to his mum yelling "IM COMING MUM!"
He turned on his heels and ran back to Lily and he hugged her one last time. "I love you Lils" He whispered before run back to his mum.
"LOVE YOU TOO SPENCE!" Lily called out.
She stood up, her checks stained with tears.
She didn't want to lie to him, but it would be easier than telling him the truth. For a 9 year old, she was smart and knew what the doctors meant and her parents didn't hide anything. Her cancer was aggressive, she wouldn't survive, but she couldn't tell Spence.
