The lights are on me and the stage is hot
The bells start and all eyes are on me to play
The director looks at me hopefully
As I lift my piccolo to my lips
I say a silent prayer to play well
I close my eyes and tongue the first low note
Blend with the saxophone and clarinet
Keep the pitch up and phrase the measures right
Vibrato here and there but not too much
The judges stare while I shake terribly
I am feeling sick but I can't throw up
I love music so why is it so hard
To play without the fear of messing up
And just love the music and the moment
Oh, little piccolo, so sweet and cute
You have carried me very far
You have earned me this long desired part
The piccolo is the celebrity
The star of this soaring, beautiful tune
That I have wanted to play since last year
And finally my dream is coming true
I have worked so long and hard for this song
Cried, dreamed, hoped, prayed, and wished with all my might
That Dr. Roberts would give it to me
And he did, and he trusted me to play
I could not let him down no matter what
Somehow I can clear my mind of all thoughts
And escape in the music and moment
Everything falls into place just perfect
It does not matter what grade I will get
But instead whether I am having fun
The judges want that too…so I give in
Forget about doing everything right
And I suddenly recall what it is
That makes me head-over-heels in love with
The graceful and beauteous music.
