Chapter 1

As he passed, the villagers took glances at him full of mistrust, anger and sometimes even pity. He didn't really notice, and even if he did, he wouldn't mind those glances and also the usual cold glares he gets. He was used to being treated as an outcast. The Vikings believed that to be a real Viking you had to be very muscular, big and strong. Intelligence wasn't given as much attention as size in that village. That was why he was treated like an outcast. He wasn't muscular or strong or huge. In fact he was actually scrawny and relatively weak. He was very clever and intelligent though, but the Vikings didn't give any importance to that. On top of that, he was very clumsy and had a knack of getting into trouble by causing huge explosions and being the cause of disasters due to his bad luck. Even though he was the heir to the throne, he wasn't treated as one of them and after his mother died when he was 1, his father hadn't done a very good job of looking after him.

He also refused to kill the main threat to the Vikings... dragons! The dragons raid his village at least once every week, stealing their livestock and their fish. Most people would have moved out by now, but not the Vikings. They have stubbornness issues. Although when people asked Hiccup why he refused to kill dragons, he didn't reply properly and tried to avoid answering whenever he could, so many villagers started thinking he was a coward and afraid of the dragons. Most Vikings weren't scared of them at set up huge fire towers to ruin the cover of darkness for the dragons and to make it easier to see them and hit them with catapults and their other war weapons. Hiccup(yes it's a great name and he knows it)has made many inventions using his intelligence to help the war effort. One of his newest inventions, the mangler, is going to be used for the first time in the war. The only reason he made these weapons was so he wouldn't be exiled for being completely useless and refusing to fight dragons.

He was helping gobber, the blacksmith, in the forge mending weapons and shields. In fact, he's a great blacksmith. That's when he saw one of the Vikings setting up to shoot the night fury. 'Wow, he has great ambitions', he thought. He was certain that the Viking would miss. But he was wrong. The Viking did hit the night fury, but he got knocked back from the strength of the mangler and didn't notice a black speck speeding towards the ground in the distance. He knew the night fury would probably be dead but he would have to check anyway. He knew that with his special gift he would be able to converse with the 'unholy offspring of death and lightning itself' or whatever it was called. The raid was unsuccessful for the dragons and many of them were caught. He never understood why the dragons raided the village. He knew they were proficient at fishing.

He had to finish mending the weapons first before going out to search for the night fury. Usually there were a lot more weapons to be repaired after a dragon raid, but Hiccup really didn't mind since he wouldn't have to spend a lot of time in the forge. A few hours later he saw the other teens pass by.(warning they also don't have amazing names)Fishlegs, snotlout, the twins ruffnut and tuffnut and... Astrid. He looked at her dreamily as she passed. He had had a crush on her since he was 13... but clearly the feeling wasn't mutual. She never jeered at him or insulted him but she never defended him either. Once he was finally done mending his part of the stack of weapons, it was already nighttime. "Gobber, I'm done with my set of weapons and I'm really tired. See you tomorrow."

"Yer did a good job. Good nigh' 'icuup". Hiccup went off, heading towards his house to change his clothes since his tunic and shirt were covered with sweat due to the heat from the forge. Soon after he headed to the forest.
