Embrace It

Kitty Pyrde wasn't typically the type of teenage girl that accessorized. With her newfound X-Men identity, she never took the vain time to bother over some ringlet when it would just get in the way. Nervously eying her thin frame in the full-length mirror before her, the thick, wooden bangles clanked together with each movement she made. No matter how subtle, it was sure to draw attention. And that was what she wanted least. Shoving the wrist wear off the length of her bare arm, the brunette frantically rummaged through her vanity stand.
"Come on…" She muttered urgently, fingertips dancing across the various items for her prey.
Gotcha! Slipping on a few chic bands made thickly of beads, the girl known to walk through walls grinned in triumph, sliding the strewn drawers shut. Slinging her worn backpack casually over her shoulder, she dropped down to the level below her, the hardwood seemingly engulfing her petite body.
…
Later that day, the troubled teen found herself back in her room, searchingly staring at her reflection. The portraying glass wouldn't lie to her face, it only bore the plain truth. And what she saw killed her.
All day, her latest accessory had received a torrent of rapid fire compliments. At first, she didn't mind, but then…
She began to feel scared for herself.
She wanted to cry.
She wanted to do a lot of things, actually.
Her wrists began to itch, throbbing marks of her flesh burning like a smoldering flame.
…If only they knew what was under those many bracelets.
