The Life Of
Scott Anspaugh
after his father dies
Scott was still in the middle of his chemo treatments and was having a rough time
with them. When Dr. Anspaugh got the news that he would be required to attend a weekend
long conference in Boston, he was very hesitant to attend. But since his attendance was
mandatory, he had arranged for Scott to stay with Doug and Carol. This way if Scott had any
problems with his cancer while his dad was away, Doug would be there to help him through.
Scott and Doug are driving home after Scott was finished with his last bag of nuke juice.
Scott was staying with Doug and Carol because his father is in Boston.
After Doug and Scott arrived home from the hospital, they wandered into the kitchen
to find Carol preparing chicken nuggets for dinner. Doug gave her a quick peck on the cheek
before he picked up the twins from their playpen. He took all three children into the
living room to get them out of Carol's way while she worked. As he sat down on the leather
couch he attempted to pick up the remote control, but found it impossible with both girls
squirming in his arms.
"Scott, could you turn on the six o'clock news please?" Doug asked.Scott turned on a
local TV station."Flight 543 from Boston to Chicago has crashed. . ." the news anchor was
saying."Doug, that was the flight my dad was on!" Scott said. "I'm sure he's fine Scott,"
Doug started to say. But the news anchor continued, ". . .there were no survivors."
A single tear rolled down Scott's face as he realized his father was gone. He began
to cry, sobs racking his body. Doug gently put Kate and Tess down on the carpet, then he
pulled the small teenager into his arms. Doug began to gently rub circles on Scott's back,
attempting to console the distraught teen.
"Doug this can not be happening to me. I don't have anyone to live with but you,"
said Scott, still crying."You are always welcome here, Scott. You will always have a home
here," Doug said gently.
Just then Carol entered the living room to announce dinner was ready. She noticed
Scott was upset. "Scott, what's wrong?" she asked, concerned. Carol walked over to the couch
and sat down next to Scott and Doug."Carol, my dad died. It was on the news. His plane
crashed and there were no survivors," he choked.
Forgetting about dinner, Carol squeezed Scott's shoulder. Scott just continued to
cry into the shoulder of Doug's scrub top. "Do you want to get some dinner?" Carol asked
gently."No, I'm too upset to eat right now."Scott replied "I'm here for you, Scott," she
gently reassured him. "No one is going to make you do anything you don't want to right now."
Tears stung Doug's eyes as he held Scott. He continued to rub Scott's back and
whisper soothingly to him. Beside them, Carol had also begun to cry as the news of her
friend and colleague's death sank in. For almost an hour they sat there in silence, Scott
still crying in Doug's arms. After awhile Scott began to calm down, and Doug took him up to
bed. Scott was still very upset and spent quite awhile crying into his pillow before
drifting off to sleep.
