Conflict
Chapter One
Narrated by Matt
Jimmy's parents are getting a divorce and he has to move to Texas with his father. The reverend doesn't approve of a long distance relationship, but Lucy is determined to try. Matt is also faced with a difficult dilemma.
I was watching the TV on the couch when the doorbell rang. I let it ring once and then got up to get it. Jimmy was out there waiting.
"Oh hey, I think Lucy will be down in a minute" I said and then held open the door for him to step in before turning my head to the stairway to holler for Lucy
"Lucy!" I yelled up the stairway
"I think she'll be down any minute, do want to come inside and sit down" I said as I waved toward the living room
"Sure" he replied with only a little bit of nervousness in his voice
I let jimmy in and then sat down next to him on the couch and turned the TV on to ESPN
"So... Where's dad taking you guys tonight?" I asked him
"I was going to take Lucy to see a movie" he replied with more nervousness in his voice.
It seemed like he had something important on his mind but I didn't get a chance to ask him what because dad walked in the room
"Hey Jimmy, how's everything going?" he said before picking up a magazine off the coffee table.
"Not so bad, thanks for asking, is Lucy almost ready?"
"I think I just saw her in the hallway"
Then Lucy walked into the room straightening her shirt and when she looked up and saw Jimmy she had a surprised look on her face
Dad got up from his chair before she could speak and walked toward her
"Oh hey luce, you look nice"
"Dad" she said in a humiliated tone
He turned to me and then looked back at her "Ok, Ok ill be in the car, but don't you two keep me waiting"
Lucy gave me a sharp look so I got up and went out to the car with dad
"Hey I think ill come along for the ride" I said to try and explain his puzzled look
"All right but I hope you don't just want to spy on Lucy and Jimmy, actually there's something I wanted to talk to you about so I guess we can stop by the pool hall. What do say about that?"
"Sure, but what do you want to talk about" I asked not totally sure if I wanted to know
"Actually it's kind of important, so let's just wait"
After that Lucy and Jimmy came out so I shut-up and sat back in the seat, I was really afraid of what dad was going to talk to me about so I was racking my brain to think of something I might of done but I couldn't come up with anything. We drove first to the movie theater where dad told Lucy he would pick them up at nine and then we drove over to the pool hall. I walked behind dad like a scared dog and we sat down at a table in the corner.
The waitress came over and dad just asked for two cokes. By the expression on his face I could tell he really had something serious on his mind
"Matt I really don't know how to start this conversation and I have so many questions right now so I'm just going to throw one out there and see where you take it"
Dad then reached into his jacket pocket and laid something on the table. Then it hit me like train and I couldn't believe I had forgotten about it. It was the box of condoms I had bought from the drug store almost a month ago when I went out with Allison.
"Would you just please explain why you have these" he said as he sat it down on the table and looked at me right in my eyes so I couldn't look away.
