A/N: Hey, this is shitjustgotreal speaking. I just wanted to apologize big time for the long-ass hiatus of three years. I remember starting this story during the show's first season, and now the whole series is finished. Still, this was my first ever fanfiction so ot was very precious to me. Haha, I'd understand if you grew tired of waiting for the update, lol i'd be too. But anyways, here goes nothing. I'll be editing chapters 1-2 as well. Thank you!
Disclaimer: I don't own Kuroko no Basket or any anime that is said in this story.
It was a cold night, wind seemingly making its own 'whistle' sound in the empty streets, leaves circling around the ground, dancing in rhythm. It was a perfect night for relaxing, and in one particular girl's mind, lying on the cold hard floor, staring blankly at the ceiling, matched with her trademark scowl.
That one particular girl's name is Akane, with an unusually red-colored hair (natural by the way), she often gets weird looks because of it, but she was accustomed to it by now, and grew to love her hair, not because it was beautiful or what-not, but because one of her favorite guys' sports the same colorful hair, and by guys, she meant those guys.
Akane's eyes sparkled staring at the poster of her favorite anime on the wall of the living room... or was it their kitchen? She don't know, and she don't care. She's lived in the small run-down house half of her life with her little brother, and they've come to accept their label in the society. They were even grateful as they were only kids. Barely an adult, she became the guardian of her little brother, Kenji, when their parents died in a car accident years ago.
It was one of the hardest moments of her life, possibly Kenji's as well, but he's too young to remember what happened and he never asked his sister knowing full well that she gets emotional whenever the topic of their parents get spoken. Kenji knew beneath his sister's tough persona and never-ending fighting spirit lies a girl - just a girl - who needed her parents as well.
She was ten when their parents died in a car accident, and Kenji was only five. It came as a shock to the whole family, but even more so, to the two children that lost their parents all too soon. They weren't rich then, but they had managed with both their parents working. Her mother was a teacher, and her father was a waiter of an old cafe in the town, but after the accident, things went downhill from there. Though everything was looking downright negative for the both of them, it seems that God still show mercy on those that never gives up, or in her case, plain desperate.
A week after the accident and grieving, good friends of their parents- that they never met once- helped them get through the ordeal. They had raised funds ofr the two kids in honor of their good friends. Those people weren't rich as well, they lived the same as them when their parents were still alive, but they extended their hands helping these kids that they'd don't even know and for that, she was forever grateful and promised that she'd pay them back when she grows older. Though she doubt she'd be able to pay them all back in the state she is now, a helpless highschool scholar owith a part-time pay that only goes to her and Kenji's everyday expenses. She can't even buy a gift for Kenji for his birthday (and past birthdays for that matter).
She was now sixteen and her brother is now eleven. The two were extremely close, and understood each other more than anyone. She goes to the same cafe her father used to work and worked part-time there, when she turned fourteen, she asked the boss, whom was also one of the few people who helped her and Kenji a few years back, and immediately hired her. She was thankful and blessed for these people.
Akane rolled over her side and stared at the poster again, one of Kuroko no basket, her favorite anime. She smiled softly before sitting up from the floor. Everyone would think she's just a plain nerdy-kind of girl, with the matching specs that the corn dog lady's daughter gave her when she accidentally knocked down the whole stand one time a year ago. Everything was all good, but she was still embarassed of the whole thing and would blush whenever she'd see the corn dog lady and her daughter, which was everyday since they live the same apartment building. She took extra good care of the glasses ever since.
Anyway, back to the topic, she never thought she'd even like anything other than reading and studying (which she doesn't like doing by the way, but had no choice if she want to stay on the honor-student roll) but when her brother came home one afternoon with his trademark cheeky grin while holding a new manga issue of 'Naruto Shippuden' was she suddenly aware of those things called 'manga' and 'anime'. And ofcourse she scolded and nagged the brat for an hour straight about spending his allowance for those things. It was also a week later that she heard the same from her classmates, but this time a different anime, 'Kuroko no basket' they said. She was just human, capable of being 'curious', and so she went to the library and used her full break time to search for this 'kuroko no basket', and maybe skipping classes afterwards with the thought of 'just one last episode' in mind, though it never happened and she fell in love with the boys.
"Oi onee-chan, stop smiling like that, you're creepy." Akane was broken out from her thoughts and immediately casted Kenji a glare, "Shut up brat, you do the same with that white-eyed girl on the poster in our room. It scares me to be honest." "Hey! And she's Hinata by the way!" Kenji pouted before taking a seat beside her, puting down two cups of steamy ramen. Akane rolled her eyes, "don't tell me you're trying to act like Naruto too with your diet." Kenji sighed, "and you have anything better for us to eat with your savings?" Akane proceeded by slurping down on her ramen, "I thought so." Kenji copied her and they ate in peace.
Kenji looked at the clock for a minute before hurrying towards the small television they had and turned it on, the wind was too heavy outside so the signal was a bit affected, and the screen would blur for a minute before clearing again, though the younger of the two was enjoying his time. Akane's eyes softened, until she heard the familiar opening of 'Naruto Shippuden'. Sighing, she waddled over Kenji and took a seat beside him, on the floor.
"What do you like about this show anyways? There's so much filler going on." Kenji rolled his eyes, "What do YOU like about Kuroko anyway? Because there's alot of guys? Huh?" Akane blushed before pushing her brother jokingly on the floor, "Shut up. People just watch Naruto too because of the yaoi!" Kenji gasped dramatically before pushing his sister as well, "NO! SASUKE AND NARUTO ARE SO NOT IT!" he visibly shivered. Ha, the life of otakus, Akane thought, chuckling.
They enjoyed the rest of the night watching the show before a loud thunder struck down outside, causing the whole power to shut down and they were now enveloped in complete darkness, but the two did not made any sounds. If anything, they were too calm, used to these kinds of circumstances before.
"Ah, the life of poor kids like us. Darn, it was nearing the good part too." Kenji spoke earning a laugh from the older sibling, "Look for the lighter, I'll get the candles in the room." Akane said before walking slowly towards their shared bedroom, but before she could take another step she heard a frantic scream from her brother and she immediately ran towards the sound, but gasped and fell down on her butt seeing a blinding light by the kitchen.
"O-onee-chan.. i-is that supposed to happen?" She heard Kenji stutter and she immediately stood up. Forget about feeling scared shitless, they need to get out of there! Maybe it was a small ball of fire or something, or a formed thunder that the previous one had caused, but she knew it was too dangerous to get close to it, heck, it was dangerous now as they were too near it. But being the smart kid she was, she grew confused of the giant ball and what it was, obviously she'd never seen something like that before and so did the history and science books she had read before.
Her thoughts were broken down once again as the little ball of sunshine (deadly one) expanded and her panic grew as she heard her brother screaming for her name, but this time, she couldn't reach him and the last thing she remembered before being dragged in by a strong force was her own self, screaming helplessly for Kenji.
