Common Mistake

Summary: "Like the Salvatore brothers, Elijah finds himself regrettably in love Elena." Elijah lied when he said he wouldn't make that mistake again. He tried not to, of course, but something about the young doppelganger Elena draws him in. The sad thing is, he knows he will never have her. Elijah/Elena. One-shot for now, but may become multi-chapter if people like it.

Common Mistake

After Stefan's apology, and Damon's "you can all go to hell" spew, Elena shows Elijah to his room.

"Damon will warm up to you eventually." Elena said. "Here." she opened the door to a guest room.

"I highly doubt it." Elijah replied, being his usually blunt self. "The only reason Stefan's even tolerating me being here is for you, surely you know that."

"Yeah, I know that." Elena looked into his eyes. "But, I'm a big girl and since I own the house now, whatever I say goes."

Elena was shocked to see a half-smirk place itself on Elijah's face. Then it vanished. "Well, good night, Elena." he said.

"Night, Elijah. Sleep well." she replied softly. He turned and went into the room, and the door shut with a soft click. Elena stared at his door for a few seconds before walking away to her room.

Elijah looked around the room he would be staying in for a while. How long, he did not know. But, if it helped Elena, he would stay as long as needed. The room had wooden walls, and navy blue sheets and pillows on the bed. Navy blue was his favourite colour. How on Earth had she known? Maybe she hadn't. Maybe it was just a coincidence. Whatever it was, he knew staying in the room wouldn't be so bad.

He lay in the bed that night, wide awake. His head was plagued with thoughts of Elena. He promised himself he'd never go down that road again. But, love wasn't something he could control. He couldn't choose who he fell in love with. Like the Salvatores, he was hopelessly in love with her. But, he was no fool. He knew she'd never love him back. And it broke his undead heart.

Elijah woke up to the sun in his eyes. He groaned and put his head under the pillow. Then he threw the pillow across the room and sat up. He'd taken off his suit jacket to go to bed, and his shoes and trousers. He put all those items on and looked at himself in the mirror. He looked like the immaculate Original and not like he'd just gotten out of bed. That was what he was aiming for. He left the room.

Everyone was sitting there. Elena, Stefan and Damon. He sat down on the same couch as, but not right next to, Elena.

"So, Elijah." Stefan looked at him. "How can you save Elena's life?" It was clear he still didn't trust Elijah.

"It's quite simple, really." Elijah said. "The man who loves the doppelganger has to die."

"I'll do it." Stefan and Damon said at the same time.

"It has to be the one she's in love with, too." Elijah sat up straighter and stared at Stefan.

"OK, I'll do it." Elena looked sad.

"And Judgey will kill Klaus." Damon said. Elijah looked at Elena with an expression on his face that seemed to say, Who?

"My witch friend, Bonnie." Elena clarified.

Elijah nodded. "Ah, yes. That makes more sense."

"Is that all?" Damon asked bitterly.

Elijah nodded. "Elena will be unable to die."

"Wow." Elena whispered.

Elijah was standing outside the boarding house, staring into the distance. He felt like they were just using him. Maybe they were. No, the little voice in his head said. Elena wouldn't do that. That was the saddest thing. He didn't know if she was only using him or not.
