His father gave him everything he wanted
But with one memory he will always be haunted
The pet falcon that he once had
A memory turned sour by his own dad
His father said if the bird could be tamed the boy could keep it
So he tried and tried, with all the right kit
He knew all the cuts in his hands would eventually mend
And after all of the care and training the bird loved him in the end
He told his father, but he did not have the reaction you would have thought
He snapped the birds neck, this was not the response the little boy sought
He said that by making the bird love him he had broken it and failed
And down the little boy's cheeks many tears trailed
That little boy never cried again
Even at times that would have saddened other men
To love is to destroy
Said the golden haired boy
And to be loved is to be the one destroyed
