Little birds

I cry when angels deserve to die

Father, into your hands I commend my spirit

Why have you forsaken me

Chop suey, System of a down

This night is beautiful. The most beautiful of all the nights Gabriel has ever seen and he has seen them all, one by one, since the creation of the world, reflected in fair eyes of the Lord. And of all of His works this night is the most beautiful, indescribable, unique.

It will come to Gabriel in dreams; he thinks about it, sitting in a car and looking through the window. Simple sentence runs through his head, sentence said in a different life to the man who doesn't exist anymore.

"Act natural", Gabriel shouted then and he shouts now to himself, in his head, with all his body, when everything around soughs, unbearable noise, noise and flapping of wings, roar of flames and crushing of bird bones… and that scream, sob of Heaven's every throat.

They are falling. His brothers. Tiny birds, pushed from the nest, falling straight on the Earth, to break their necks, for human life's flicker, and then… then there will be nothing, not even brother's angel blade between ribs – Gabriel smiles for fraction of a second– not even this, not the burnt shadow behind your back, not the energy of a dying star, just the end, it is finished.

It's beautiful, Gabriel thinks, hidden on the backseat, with Chuck sleeping behind the wheel, car staying on the shoulder. Gabriel could wake him up; to make him see it, too, to make him believe that it's time to… to come back. To work.

"Why?", Gabriel asks the darkness, pressing his nose to the glass. „Why, Chuck?", he whispers and the shadow of his enormous wings lays on the door and windows, on Chuck's face, everywhere, soft, soft, unimaginable shadow.

Chuck isn't sleeping but his eyes are closed. He's afraid that if he opened them, he would never get rid of the view of this night. He knows that this is not as it should be but what can he do, little Chuck with his little angel, lost somewhere in American nowhere, in old wreck, in the middle of a night?

He can hear the screams, lamentation of million voices, flowing from Heaven, and he can hear Gabriel's whisper: "Chuck. Why not me? Why did you forget about me?"

Chuck doesn't open his eyes, but he can feel tears under his eyelids. Gabriel will notice them, will find them soon. Chuck knows that Gabriel will not understand but maybe… maybe he will trust him, this little Gabe bird. They will have to try.
