Hermione Granger tapped her quill along with the beat of her favorite band. As usual, she sat alone in a corner of the library studying for her winter exams long before everyone else. Ever since Dumbledore allowed students to bring iPods to Hogwarts she found studying in solitude to be much easier than before. When someone sees that you're listening to music, they tend to leave you alone. Most of the time.
Suddenly her earphones were ripped away from her. The sudden loss of sound startled her and she whipped around to see who the offender was.
"Hey!" she snapped, finding herself staring into the ice-grey eyes of her favorite Slytherin, Draco Malfoy. "Is there a reason you just took my iPod away?" She tried snatching it back, but Draco jerked it out of her reach.
"Yeah Granger, what is the point of these? I've seen a few of them around. Ridiculous looking things, you had wires coming from your bushy head." Draco examined the iPod warily, as if it would suddenly come to life and strangle him.
Hermione huffed irritably. "It's for listening to music. Now give it back, I'm trying to study." She swiped for her iPod again, but once again Draco moved his hand away in time. He plopped down in the chair across from her, clicking buttons after determining the foreign object was safe.
Wow, have a seat why don't you? Hermione thought to herself as she watched the blond Slytherin fiddling with her device.
"So, Granger, studying already I see? You do realize that exams aren't for weeks, right? Shouldn't you be doing something more useful with your time?"
"I am perfectly aware of when exams are. You shouldn't be making fun of my studying habits though, seeing how you've come in second in exams for the past four years," Hermione stated smugly.
Draco stared at her, momentarily distracted by her comeback. She chose that opportunity to seize her iPod.
"Hey! Wait a minute! I still don't understand this thing!"
"I already told you," Hermione sighed. "It's for listening to music."
"But… how?"
"Can't you go ask one of your Slytherin friends and leave me alone?"
"Of course not!" Draco said this as if were the most obvious thing in the world. "I can't have any of them thinking that they're better than me because they know something I don't!"
Hermione stared at him in disbelief. He stared back, intently waiting for her to explain the strange box. She shook her head quickly and said:
"Fine. You see these little wires that are coming out of it? Those are called earphones. You put the end in your ear and you click on a song and then you can hear it." She demonstrated, and then grudgingly handed the iPod back to Draco. He put the earphone in his ear. She watched as his eyes widened in shock.
"Wow! It's like the song is playing in my head! This is so cool!" Draco shouted, unaware of his volume.
"Shhh! Just because you can't hear yourself doesn't mean that no one else can. And did Draco Malfoy, the most egotistical pureblood I know, admit that a muggle device was cool?" She took back her iPod.
"Uhh.. that's beside the point. I want one of these. Hey! Christmas is in a few weeks, I'll just have my parents get me one!" he said excitedly.
"Yes, that would be wonderful," Hermione retorted. "Let's just have your mum and dad go to a muggle store to buy a muggle device. They'll be absolutely delighted that you're broadening your interests."
"Right. Bad idea. I guess I'll just have to use yours…"
"Yeah that's not happening."
"Yes it will."
"No it won't."
"What if I say please?"
"Hmmm…."
"Please?"
"No."
"Dammit why not?"
"Maybe one day when you're actually nice, then I'll let you borrow my iPod."
…
…
"Hey Granger."
"Yes?"
"Have I ever told you how much I liked your hair?"
Just randomly thought of that! Please let me know what you think!
