Spoilers: For 2x16 Afterlife.

He was smiling despite himself. It had been a long while since they'd been so in sync – so psychically linked, as Skye would say – as they had been today.
He felt bad about leaving her there, but he comforted himself with the fact that she wasn't alone, May was still there too. Besides she wasn't in any immediate danger, no one would kill her if they found out – at least he didn't think so – It wasn't like when she had been undercover in Hydra. They did call themselves Shield, so he hoped they acted like it if it came down to it.
It was amazing how normal it had felt in the midst of chaos. Once he'd realized what she'd been doing, he had taken on his role, and he was sure they'd both sold it convincingly enough. Everybody knew how steep a cliff there already was between them, so their parting like that would seem like a natural development, however sad. But what the others hadn't taken into account was how deep their friendship actually ran. They might be angry at each other, but that didn't mean they wouldn't support each other against a common enemy.
His small smile still lingered, it had been brought on by the little surprise in his backpack, a prosciutto & mozzarella sandwich with a hint of pesto aioli. He hadn't had the pleasure of tasting one of her homemade sandwiches in a long time – being on the run and fighting Hydra would do that. It wasn't since that mission with Ward, well he didn't really have the pleasure back then either, before it was so rudely thrown away, only the enticing smell of it had survived in his memory, he hadn't even had a chance to take one little bite. This one, however – he breathed the aroma in – this one he was going to enjoy fully. He took a big bite as the cab pulled out and headed towards the airport.
'Be safe' she had written on the attached note, and he intended to be, he just hoped she would take her own advice, and be safe also, until they met again.
