Some people never get told the backstories of why things are the way they are. A long time ago, before Craig, before Sean, before Ellie or Marco, the Degrassi kids were a different group. Sometimes the simplest moments in history can be forgotten, or in Spinner and Ashley's case, ignored.
Grade-seven Spinner Mason sat, head in hands, alone at a table in the Dot Grill. Thoughts ran over his head and he ground his teeth together in frustration. The bell above the door tolled to announce the entry of another customer, but he didn't look up.
Ashley Kerwin took a deep breath, spying Spinner at a far table. She pulled out the seat across from him and sighed, but he didn't move.
"Spin," she said, and his eyes slid up to look at hers.
"Ash," he groaned, laying his hands on the table and looking past her shoulder.
She tried to read his face, "We need to talk," she said.
He ran a hand through his hair before replying, "About what?" goodnaturedly.
It was her turn to grit her teeth as she looked at him, "Don't play dumb."
"It's not an act," he said sourly, and she grimaced.
"Spinner, we kissed. And as much as you probably think it's a mistake, I don't."
He studyed her for a while, "I don't think it's a mistake," he contradicted her.
She looked taken aback for a moment, "You don't?"
"No, but just because I think that doesn't mean I don't regret it."
"What," she replied sarcastically, "You seeing someone on the side? Like Paige Michealchuck?"
She was referring to another girl in their seventh grade class, a nerdy blond who wore baggy clothing. He suppressed a grin.
"No," he said, "It's Jimmy."
She looked disgusted, "You? And Jimmy? Gosh, I didn't know you swung that way, Spin!"
"Hah hah," he replied sarcastically, and she smiled, "He likes you."
"Oh," she replied, her mouth forming the perfect shape.
"Yeah," he sighed, standing, "I'll be going now. No use for me in your life any more. Yep."
She reached up to him and grabbed his arm, pulling him back.
"Jimmy," she said, "can get over it." And she closed the space between them, kissing him lightly before he pulled away.
"Ashley," he said, and she looked up at him with hope glimmering in her eyes, "I can't do that to Jimmy."
She took in a sharp intake of breath and broke eye-contact as he walked toward the door. The next day was a Monday, and Jimmy Brooks greeted Ashley awkwardly before asking her if she'd be his girlfriend. Spinner looked on as she agreed, then turned the corner down the hall.
Author's note: okay, this was kindof bad. Eep. Lo's 'o diolauge. Let me begin by saying that I have watched Degrassi since the first season and you stink if you haven't. Whoops, sorry that just slid out. ::Blushes:: Anyway, this is set before the first season. I've tried to make that as clear as possible. And Spin/Ash = adorable. Forever. I want them together. Or him and Ellie. Or her and Jimmy. Just not him and Paige ::shudders:: and her and ... anyone else?
Review, please?
