Disclaimer: Squaresoft owns Seifer, Zell and Squall. I sent a desperate
note instead of my usual Christmas list, but all I got was Zell's phone.
Author's Note: Fanfiction.net missed out some of the
italics, so towards the end, you have to figure out which are Zell's thoughts.
I hate it when that happens. On with it - this is totally pointless, and
doesn't fit in anywhere… but it bugged for ages and I had to write it down. I'm
not quite sure if I should leave it this way, or if it should become a
chaptered story. You tell me.
He picks up his mobile, and starts to punch in a number, a number
permanently etched onto his mind.
He is barely halfway through when a prickling despair starts a
tug-of-war with longing, and he cancels the call.
He leans back, breathing hard, and lets an inappropriate level of
peacefulness settle upon him, then starts dialling again.
This time, he waits in silence with trepidation, hand shaking slightly
as he closes his still tear-filled eyes, tears he now is too proud to shed.
The phone is picked up.
"Hello?"
That voice.
Still brutally arrogant and sarcastic, yet familiar enough for him to
be at ease with.
"Seifer? That you?"
"Duh."
A short silence, and they open their mouths to speak at the same time.
"How-"
"I-"
An awkward laugh from both parties.
"You first," he says, for it is a small sacrifice.
"Didn't expect to hear from you. It's been so long. Did you miss me
then?"
You're right, it's been so long. I missed you far more than you ever
will miss me.
"Not all that much," A fake laugh. "Just checking how you are and
stuff. So how's it going, man?"
"Fine. Nothing much, really, things are as boring as ever. Your turn."
I have so much to tell you, but I have to keep everything in. You'll
probably hang up on me.
He sighs. "It's disgusting. Not doing all that well in my work, same
old social life, absolutely no love life."
"Well, Dincht, you know all about my love life, don't you?"
Of course I know all about it.
Why the hell do you think I'm sitting here trying not to sob my eyes out then?
He swallows hard. "Yes…about you and Squall, huh?"
"Glad you do." A sigh. "Wonder how the rest are going to react when
they hear about it."
What about me?
"Well, I-"
"Yeah, what do you think?"
Fuck,
Seifer, don't you know how much I love you? Don't tell me you never sensed it?
Don't tell me you weren't feeling the same thing when we kissed, even when it
was so brief? Don't you know how much I'm hurting and how much I want to slash
my wrists now?
His lips are so dry they hurt him when he talks. "In my opinion,
it's…okay, because it's love, know what I mean? Like, even if the whole world's
against your relationship, nothing can stop it because all that matters is both
of you, and how you feel?"
"Well said." The voice is pleased. "Didn't know you had that wisdom in
you."
I want to quit the crappy talk now, because you know, Seifer, you know.
How can it be okay if I love you too? I didn't know I could lie so well.
"How long do you think your relationship'll last?" the words are out of
his mouth before he can stop himself.
"When I stop being interested in him, and him in me, I suppose,"
Would
you even consider me after that?
"Would you still be friends with him then?"
"Don't know. Don't care," the voice is now vaguely annoyed. "Why
suddenly ask so many questions?"
Well, here goes. It's now or never.
"Because…" he braces himself for the outburst he will
be letting out. "Because I love you, Seifer Almasy."
"Seifer?
Seifer?"
A beep.
The phone's run out of battery.
