We read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton in Language Arts class. As an assignment, we ahd to write a poem based on Pony's conversation with Cherry about Greasers and Socs, and the line 'It ain't fair!" This is the haiku I wrote (haiku 5 beat line, 7 beat line, 5 beat line). Enjoy, and remember: reviews are loved!!!
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Why is it like this?
Nothing goes right for Greasers
Our lives are so hard
All working so hard
But never going further
Down the road of life
No money at all
No way to go except to
Steal the things we need
Hand-me-down sweaters
Old houses and empty lots
No reason to live
Dropping out of school
To make some extra money
That's already spent
Then there's the West Side
Socs in their madras shirts
Money spent on junk
Jumping us for fun
They spend all their free time drunk
Plentiful free time
Why do they have time
When us East-Siders have none?
We spend time working
Why do they hurt us?
Maybe Socs have it hard
Maybe they use us
Are we their scapegoats?
Are we their anger outlet?
Possibly, I guess
We are so different
And yet we are all the same
I wish they knew that
Greasers have it rough
Socs have the perfect lives
That's the way it goes.
I wish it was switched
Only for a day, I mean.
They could live our lives
If they tried it once,
It would change the way they think
They wouldn't jump us
I don't want pity.
I just want our ways to change
No more shoplifting
No more shining blades
Just peace between all people
Is that much to ask?
