He remembers the day he first found out that she was cutting. He hadn't known she was in the washroom and she had been on the floor, flushed, and a razor in her hand. There were three deep and fresh cuts on her arm. Chad had been calm but on the inside, he was terrified. Scared as hell. She collected herself and made him swore to never tell anyone. Chad promised, who would he tell anyways? There was no one he could trust. That following night, she stayed in bed. Chad busied himself in his work at the studio, wanting to forget that his girlfriend of nine months was cutting herself. It bothered him greatly.
He decided to visit her. Her mother wasn't home and she had given him an extra key, so he let himself in. The house was quiet but he heard the TV play in her room. He opened the door. Sonny immediately sat up but sighed in relief when she saw him. "Sorry for scaring you."
"It's fine, what are you doing here?"
"I came to visit." He sat down beside her, noticing her long-sleeved shirt. She moved over, giving him space, and leaned in forward when he wrapped his arms around her. She put the TV on mute but they both watch the moving pictures in silent.
"You shouldn't have found out." She said, without taking her eyes off the television.
"I would've anyway." He grumbled, looking in the other direction.
"It's none of your business."
"That's really a stupid thing to say, really, Sonny. 'None of my business'? Really?"
"It's not a big deal, Chad!"
"Of course it is, what's stupid is that little thought in your head that's making you do this!"
"Oh and how would you know that?"
"Because everything in your life is perfect, Sonny!"
"Why would you say that?" She got up, accusingly glaring at the boy in front of her. "What kind of an assumption is that?"
"Alright fine, let me look in your perspective, what's so wrong that you'd rather cut yourself than talk to me, or anyone, about this?" He walked around the bed, stepping closer to her. She was cornered. "A broken nail? Nah, probably more of Tawni's thing. Someone didn't tell you about sloppy Joe day? Grady's thing. You didn't make it on time fo-"
"Screw off, Chad." She brushed past him and headed for the door. Chad cut her off, shutting the door shut. But she knows he won't give up until he knows what it is because that's how Chad Dylan Cooper is, too stubborn for his own good.
"Sonny, you're my girlfriend and my best friend, what else is there for me to do? Read a book about the color mauve." He scoffed and leaned against the door. Sonny's eyes watered but she pushed him away when he reached for a hug. "You're the only thing I worry about, Sonny."
"Why, because I'm broken?"
"You're not broken, Sonny." He stroked her cheek. "It's just, I have nothing better else to do."
She laughed and hit his arm. Chad had a lopsided grin on his eyes. But things became serious again. It was the pressure. The fame and the press, everything was in your face. It had gotten to her and nearly drove her off the edge. She told him everything and he listened to her quietly. "I guess I didn't know who to talk to."
"I find that offensive."
"Oh, shut up." She bit his finger.
"Ow!" He yelped and yanked it away.
"That's what you get!"
He attacked her, tickling her. She tried to break free but he had her. She fell to the floor and she pulled him along. They laughed until they couldn't breathe anymore. When they finally caught their breath, they went to the kitchen. He decided to make a sandwich and she watched from the counter. He stepped in-between her legs and wrapped his arms around her, kissing her forehead. She closed her eyes as he did. "I like this," She said, without much thinking. He looked at her with her eyes still closed. "very much."
"What?" He asked as she opened her eyes. "Playing house with me while your mom is out?"
"…for god's sake." She said, shaking her head.
