Waiting

She blinked a few times, trying to rid her eyelashes of the soft snowflakes that had been continuously falling for the past few hours. Her right knee hurt from kneeling on the Communication Tower floor for so long, but she wasn't about to give up. She'd wait for hours, days, weeks, or whatever it'd take for her prey to come into position.

And this was very special prey.

With her right eye glued to the scope, she scanned the white terrain for any movement. The night was silent. Perfect for a wolf to announce its presence with a long, strained howl. Perfect for a sniper.

The wait continues, but her patients doesn't hinder. She was trained to wait. It's her job. Her life. She's an observer of the war. Keeping her distance, but always ready to fight with solitary confidence. Her mind wandered a bit, and she began to think about her life. Or, old life. Her family that was brutally taken away from her. The mornings she spent praying for salvation. Her dreams of peace that had been shattered by the reality or war.

"So what do you think? Pretty good, huh?"

A woman's voice rang out in the freezing air. A gust of wind carried it around the tower and up to her position, practically whispering the words into her ears. She immediately saw the small figure in the distance, zooming in with her scope to get a better look. A young female who looked to be in her mid-twenties stood at the end of the snow covered bridge. No, this isn't right. This isn't her prey. A mistake? Why is there- - But just then, a male's voice replied.

"How did you know where the mines were?"

That voice. She knew it well. She had listened to recordings of that voice over and over again, memorizing its deep, rough sound. Her scope panned over to the second figure that was walking towards the female. She zoomed even closer. Yes, yes, this was him. This was the prey she had waited for. This was her prize.

The two of them conversed for a few moments, giving her time to think. She knew her opponent well, and she knew he would be fast to react. She'd need a trap—no, a lure, to draw him out of the hiding he'd go into at the first sound of a gunshot. And now, looking at this fool-hardy woman standing in front of her, she knew she had one.

She adjusted her rifle into the right position, slowed her breath, and steadied her hands. She was ready. She had waited for this moment. Her revenge. Her takeover. Her duty.

The red laser landed on the woman's left breast. Sniper Wolf took a deep breath, smiled, and pulled the trigger.
