Prologue

"Luna?" cried a terrified voice. It was the voice of a boy, no older than fourteen or fifteen. "Where are you?" It was frantic, scared.

"Kei!" replied a girl's voice, also filled with fear. "I'm over here!" The girl, Luna, coughed.

"I can't see you in the dust! It's too dark!" Kei cried. His voice was farther away now.

"Just follow my- ahhh!" Luna was cut off when a piece of roof fell and knocked her unconcious.

"Luna!" screamed Kei, terrified. He ran, hopefully in her direction, but he couldn't see where he was going in the falling darkness which obscured the town.

The only light came from lamps that lit the sides of streets and fire. The fire ravaged the town. Everything it touched was soon consumed in flames. It let off a horryfing, burning glow. The fire was started by a demon, a demon of the devil himself, some said. No one really knew how it had come to exist, but it had been destroying towns and lives for a few months.

Kei pushed through people who were running, screaming, in the opposite direction. He ran away from safety in order to save his best friend. At last, he arrived at a collapsed house. At least, half of it was collapsed. The other half was propped against a column, leaning precariously. Kei coughed in the dust and smoke.

"Luna," he called quietly, scared, as he crept cautiously through the house. "Where are you?"

"Kei," he heard Luna's voice whisper hoarsely. "I'm..." She began to cough. "I'm over here." Kei followed the sound of her voice to find her halfway under half of collapsed roof. Blood dripped from her head and her mouth and from various wounds on her arms.

Even covered in blood, Luna's so pretty, Kei thought, tears beginning to fall. He knew it was childish, but he couldn't help it.

And she was pretty, with her long blonde hair and ocean blue eyes. Her face was kind and her smile radiated friendliness.

"Luna..." Kei began, but he couldn't finish. The tears dripped onto Luna's torn shirt. Luna grabbed his hand, smiling sadly.

"Don't be sad, Kei-kun. I..." She began coughing again, blood spurting from her mouth. She couldn't finish her statement.

"Luna-chan," Kei began again, "I don't want you to die... you're my best friend." He put his other hand on her head, and she sighed.

"I love you, Kei," she murmured, her face turning warm with the embarassment of confessing to her best friend. "I have for a long time..." She trailed off, not knowing what else to say.

"Luna..." Kei said, his face turning warm as well. "I... I love you too..." He turned away, embarassed. She began coughing again, and Kei knew she wouldn't last much longer. She took deep, shuddering breaths.

Luna began to say something else, but Kei didn't let her finish. He put his lips to hers, not caring that they were covered in blood. He lifted his face away, and saw a trace of smile leave her lips as her heart stopped beating.

Kei wanted to take his friend away from here, but he couldn't drag her easily. He stood up, tears blurring his vision. He slowly left the now-abandoned house, heading into the forest. He didn't care what happened now, everyone, everything... it was all gone. He fell, but didn't have the strength to stand.

He drifted in and out of conciousness, vaguely aware of the night passing to the next day. He didn't notice when he was lifted into a car, and taken away. He didn't notice his memories disappearing...
