Prologue
The cats slipped into the cave, their pelts silver in the light and with terror on their eyes. Every so often they would twitch and look around as if something was going attack them there and then. The cats followed their leader through the maze of pointed stones until they got to a pool of water that shined with the light of the moonlight seeping through a crack in the ceiling.
Then the leader stepped forward, he was long-bodied and had lean, muscular limbs. His pelt was completely covered in mud that had dried into spikes, making him look as if he was made out of stone.
"Welcome everyone" he meowed in a low rasping voice. "Moonlight lies on the water. It is time for a Telling, according to the laws of the Tribe of Endless Hunting."
"I have seen the words of the Tribe of Endless Hunting and they have chosen six cats to go to Shaptooth's lair and rid us of the foul beast."
Then a murmuring broke out in the cave.
"Who are the six cats?" One voice said above the rest.
"The names of the six chosen cats are Bird Who Rides the Wind, Rock Where Snow Gathers, Rain That Falls at Night, Fish That Swims in Large Lake, Nest Where Hawk Roosts and Talon of Swooping Eagle."
Chapter 1
"I don't want you to go!" Brook whimpered into Talon's shoulder. "I want you to stay here with me!"
Talon didn't want to leave her either. Brook was Talon's younger sister and a few days ago Sharptooth had killed their mother so Talon vowed to look after his sister, but now how could he? He needed to stay here and protect his sister, but he could not disobey The Tribe or Rushing Water.
"I have to go," replied Talon simply.
"Well if you go I'm coming with you," Answered back Brook.
Talon knew that this was a crazy idea but if she did come with him he would feel happier about the whole situation and... What was he thinking?! He couldn't let Brook go out there to her death! No matter how selfish he was he couldn't let his sister fight Sharptooth.
So Talon said to Brook, "I'm sorry Brook but I can't let you come with me, I care about you too much to watch you get killed by Sharptooth."
"If you really cared about me you would let me come with you," meowed Brook before sulking back to her sleeping hollow.
