This takes place 10 years after the last book. There's almost no Percy or Annabeth in the story. If you like it, please review and I'll post more. Yeah and it's my first Fanfiction.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Chapter 1

I couldn't be any more excited. Most people wouldn't think that being a substitute for a middle school soccer team would be the most special thing in the world, but for me, it was an opportunity of a lifetime. Soccer was my life. That doesn't mean I was very good though. Even though I made the Erindale Senior Public School soccer team, I had not even played a single competitive game.

I had played in one friendly match though, coach had told me I was filling in so that José Rodriguez could rest. José Rodriguez was the greatest young soccer player in Canada. Yes, I am from Canada. Rodriguez is amazing. He can out run any defender, shoot accurately from any distance and perform perfect passes. He immigrated to Canada from Brazil when he was 11. That was two years ago, and he brought the South American soccer spirit to our school. Ever since he came, our gym teacher, Mr. Marconi, had spent every gym period playing soccer, because he wanted a great team to back up José.

José plays my position, centre midfield. Because of him I couldn't play on the team. But I didn't mind. He had made my favourite sport, the favourite sport of the whole school. But what I didn't know was that soccer would not be nearly as important as what would happen to me in the future.

We were going to New York to play in a North American middle school soccer competition. Being the best team in Canada, the school generously paid for most of our expenses to come. Unfortunately since I was only a 3rd rank substitute, the school barely funded me.

I was sitting beside my best friend, Tyler Cheng. He was also a great player. With his fast reflexes, he could save almost any shot. What I liked about him best was the fact he liked soccer before José came. What I liked about him least was the fact he was better than me at academics. He was one of the smartest in the school, especially in math. He had scruffy black hair, dark eyes and was wearing his school sports jacket with a black and white collared t-shirt underneath. His loud snoring kept sleep on my "to do" list. Almost everyone else in the plane was sleeping apart from a middle aged man with a laptop a few seats in front of me and a blonde teenaged girl listening to her Ipod across the aisle. It was dark, silent, motionless, but most of all, boring.

I looked out the window but only to see darkness. I expected to see some lights from far below but even they were being shrouded by clouds. This being my first flight, I never knew how boring it could be to be traveling hundred of miles an hour, thousands of feet above the land, an unimaginable dream not long ago. I started to think about home and how far it was from where I was. I lived more or less in Toronto. Not downtown but still in the region. I lost my train of thought when I saw a faint light in the distance.

After staring into the darkness for a few minutes the small light blinded me. As I regained vision and got used to change in scenery, I noticed that the light seemed to be coming toward us. Maybe the sun was rising? No, it was midnight. It kept coming closer and closer, getting larger until I made out the shape of a bird. That bird was the source of this light. It was coming straight for me. It looked as though it would stop at nothing to tear my head off. With ferocity in its eyes all I could cough up was a small shrivel. It was about 50 metres away from us when it seemed to explode into an enormous ball of light. The ball of light seemed to be consuming our plane. At that moment, the plane came to a complete stop. It shook everyone awake and even though it was 12:25 at night, it was brighter than anything I've ever seen. Like the surface of the sun. As the plane fell, I heard some screaming, some of the air stewardesses yelling "Emergency Procedure!" and all sorts of panic. Before I could do anything else, I was hit in the head by some carry on luggage and I blanked out, unconscious in a plane falling thousands of feet from the sky.
