Long I walked in the woods then, when the world was young, and the mountains tall, and the shadows green and deep. The Great Darkness did not fall upon me, for the song of Valinor, the song which is lost to me now, even in the woods of Lórien, was in my heart, and its melodies sprang easily to my lips. But not sweet were they as the song of the Lómelindi, who came to me, and wrought the very airs to burnished gold with their voices.
Long I walked, beneath the starlight, clean and clear and bright as the touch of snow on a meadow in morning. But a frost was upon me, although I knew it not.
Mayhap it would have been wiser - better - more fit for my years and for his, if we had never met there, beneath the elms of Nan Elmoth, so very long ago.
But how can I turn back to the darkness, and the cold, when once I knew his fire?
