How the Mood Strikes Them
"Psstt… Hey, Donna!" An eight year-old Eric Forman whispered to the girl sitting next to him in the swings. He shot a look over at Kelso and Hyde, ramming into each other over and over in the swings a couple of feet away.
Eight year-old Donna Pinciotti, with her hair braided into pig-tails and her shirt dusty with dirt, glanced at him as he swing slowed down.
He smiled, and held out his hand, it was clenched into a fist. "I got something for you." He beamed, brushing his hair out of his eyes. She raised her eyebrows at him.
"You got me a present?" She questioned.
"Well, my mom gave me two coins for the pinball machine when we were at Piggly-Wiggly, but I spent it in the one that gave you these, and they're sort of girly, so Hyde and Kelso wouldn't want one…" He trailed off; as he spread open his hand.
In the middle of his hand sat two gleaming rings.
"They're mood rings." He explained, smiling shyly at her. "If you put them on, they turn the color of the mood you're feeling."
"So, if I'm mad at you for getting me a stupid present no one else wanted, what color would it turn?" She asked him.
"Oh, um…" He said, glancing at his feet. "I guess they'd turn red, that's what color my Dad turns when he's mad at me."
She laughed, and pinched him in the arm. "Well, now we know they won't turn red."
He grinned at her again, then slipped one onto his finger, offering the other to Donna, who pushed one onto hers.
They stared at them intently for a few seconds. "I don't think its working." Donna whispered.
"Well, maybe if we put our rings together, our moods will be strong enough to make them change color." He said, his eyebrows pulling together in worry.
He reached out his small hand, glancing at it and then staring up at Donna. She wrapped her hand around his.
They both blushed, but clung to each other tighter.
Kelso and Hyde, tired of causing each other physical pain, walked over, immediately noticed the two holding hands.
Hyde laughed loudly, and then pointed at the rings. "Look Kelso! They're married!" They both fell into fits of giggles as Eric turned an embarrassed bright red and dropped Donna's hand.
"We are not! I don't like her! She's a girl!" He said, kicking gravel at them until they ran off.
He looked back at Donna, smiling slightly. "Well, I sort of like you, I guess."
She laughed as he took her hand again.
They began to swing back and forth slowly, while the rings on their hands turned a vivid shade of dark blue.
Author's Note: I googled mood ring colors, and dark blue means "love, passion, and romance." Or that's what it said. I thought it was a cute little thing. :)
