Moon's Serenade Chapter 1
The lonesome tune of an ocarina danced through the cool night air from the breath of a blonde youth atop the roof of an average-sized house. Soft, quiet, and melancholy, notes linked together to form a harmoniously bittersweet melody that permeated through the atmosphere of the otherwise silent suburban town.
"Link!"
The voice of a younger girl brought an abrupt end to the teen's ocarina playing as a window opened.
"Link, you have school tomorrow," the girl said with an exasperated tone as she crossed her arms. "You should go to sleep."
The girl was Link's sister. She was twelve years old - four years younger than Link. She shared the same shade of dark blonde hair as well as the same bright blue eyes, though her eyes had a lighter, softer shade compared to Link's intense lightning blue irises. She has a cross expression, clearly not pleased with Link's late-night musical solo on the roof. This displeased expression didn't seem to bother Link much, however, as Link simply smiled and slipped in through the open window. His ocarina loosely held in his left hand, he softly patted Aryll's head with his right. Aryll kept the displeased look on all the way through, though she didn't protest to it.
Link slipped away, going down the stairs leading to the attic and to his room. Despite his clear affection for her, he didn't speak a word to his sister; in fact, he rarely spoke, if ever. He had barely spoken a word that whole year and it was already late October. Most people had simply accepted that Link just didn't speak at all; the attempts to force him to speak had died down last year.
Just as he got back in the attic and was about to head down he turned back and looked out the window. Whether it was some kind of premonition he had or a sixth sense or just a plain coincidence, the moment he turned around, he saw a blue flash in the sky. A mix of blue and purple hues flying across the dark, star-scattered sky. Link's mouth opened, as if he was going to speak, and then it closed. He turned away and shook his head, dismissing what he saw as a hallucination as he headed downstairs and to his room to sleep. He closed his eyes and slipped off to sleep only to be conscious again in a dream.
Sleep was never peaceful for Link. His dreams were chaotic, violent, and he was always reliving his past. Sometimes, he would dream of better times, when he was a child, with his parents and his grandmother and with Aryll, and with his friends, only to see it all break down and fall apart and disappear. Then he'd be left with nothing at all and he wouldn't mind the monsters coming up and tearing him apart. He only fought for what he loved; if his family wasn't there, if his friends weren't around, he didn't need to fight.
He wouldn't need to harness Courage.
But this time, the dream was different. His dream was of a slender girl, only, she wasn't really a girl. Blue hair and a gem embedded in her forehead, as well as purple and blue skin that appeared to meld into the cloak she had covering her body. There was a large blue gem in the center of her chest, resembling the gem in her forehead, only larger and covered at the base with a gold outline. Where her right arm would be was a fluttering length of purple fabric, like a long, very wide sleeve. The same went for her left arm, only it was a shade of blue; the same shade of blue as her face and her hair. Her slender legs were clothed in long black stockings with neon blue-green criss-cross markings.
"Master."
She spoke in a garbled tongue that Link had never heard of before but somehow understood.
"Master Link."
Link looked up at her. She was floating above Link, perpendicular to him, her face above his.
"Please wake up."
Link stared at the girl, unable to process what was happening in the dark depths of the recesses of his dream.
"Master Link, please wake up."
Link blinked, astounded by the presence in front of him. It took him a second to realize that, at this point, he was no longer in the dream world but instead in reality. Link pulled off the covers, the girl floating backward before hovering inches above the ground. Link got out of bed and stood up just as the girl slipped back again, this time toward the door, before she phased through the door and went out of his bedroom. Link stared at the door, hardly able to believe what he was seeing before he headed toward the door. He pressed his hand against the hard wooden surface before pressing his face against it as well. Unsurprisingly, it was solid. The cold surface of the doorknob sent chills down Link's spine as he opened the door and stepped out. He was only dressed in his pajamas, but he didn't have the time to care: he was far too intrigued by the vision he had seen of the floating, ghost-like girl that appeared in his room and disappeared through the door.
The girl was hovering at the bottom of the stairs, seemingly for Link to follow her. So he did. And as he did, she moved back, phasing out the front door and outside. Link hesitated for a second before he followed suit, opening the door and heading outside. The girl led him down the streets, around winding, twisted paths that he had never gone down before. Eventually, after an arduous journey, he ended up in the temple of Hylia. The temple was rather modest, as Hylia wasn't as popular a goddess as the three goddesses Din, Nayru, and Farore. However, it wasn't as though she were entirely forsaken. Her temple was, although small, not nonexistent. The girl slipped through the doors of the temple, which were locked. Link wasn't able to open any of the doors as all the entrances were closed and locked. He then considered other ways of getting in; namely, the windows. He checked all the windows and he found that one of them wasn't, in fact, locked. He opened the window and slipped into the temple, finding himself behind the statue of Hylia in the center of the temple. The girl was standing next to the statue before she phased into it.
But Link never faltered before a seemingly impossible challenge.
"Wake up!"
Link rolled out of bed, still half-asleep, as his sister dragged him out.
"You have school in twenty minutes!" she screamed at Link, who groaned as he got up.
"Hurry up!"
Link nodded sleepily, a concern for his sister, before he slowly got dressed for school and stepped out of his room.
"You have your bag packed?"
Link nodded yes.
"Good, I left some toast on the table, make sure to eat it."
Link nodded and headed to the dining room, where he found toast and jam on the table as well as two small pills.
"And take your medicine!"
Link nodded, although his sister wasn't there to see it, and he wolfed down the food his sister left for him. The medicine, however, he slipped into his pocket. He didn't see the need for it.
"Ready for school?"
Link nodded and grabbed his bag, leaving the house and heading for school.
