IAN
I ran through the tunnel caves, my heart pounding. No, I prayed. Please, please, don't let it be true. Not her. I wanted to scream. Please don't let it be too late! I rounded the corner to Doc's hospital.
"NO!" I screamed. "WANDA! WANDERER!" Arms wrapped around me, restraining me. "How could you?" I accused Doc. I broke free of Jared's grasp and rushed to the table's edge.
My Wanderer lay face down on the table, incision already made. I rushed to her side and held her hand tight. Tears streamed down my face. Her face was peaceful. "Oh, Wanda. Why? Why did you think that this was your only choice?"
"Ian?" Doc's face loomed over my shoulder. His eyes were red. "Ian," he said gently, "I have to finish the procedure." I nodded numbly. He hesitated. "Do you want to leave?" he asked. I shook my head.
He stood up. I concentrated on Wanda's face. "Jared, will you get the cryotank ready?" He moved swiftly. I took a shuddering breath. "Here we go, Jared." I squeezed my eyes shut. I heard the hiss of the cryotank. I squeezed her hand even tighter. "There." Doc let out a shaky breath. "Jared, get the Heal."
Five minutes later, Doc leaned down. "Ian. It's over." I looked up and nodded. I let go of Wanda's hand and it fell limply. I felt detached. It wasn't Wanda anymore. It was Melanie. I let Doc help me up and put his arm around me. Jared swooped in and handed me the cryotank, now blinking to show it was full. "She told me she wanted it to be buried by Walt and Wes ." I choked back a sob.
"Wait!" Jared said softly. "There's no need to bury her now. We can make a decision later. When Melanie wakes up, I'll see what she thinks is best." I felt sick, but nodded anyway. Doc cleared his throat and looked away.
We walked past Jodi. "Any response?" I asked. Doc shook his head, lowering his eyes. My grip tightened on the cryotank. We stopped at the doorway.
"Can you make it back to your room?" he asked softly. "I have to stay here and make sure Melanie wakes up smoothly."
"Yes. I can make it."
He stared at the cryotank. "Take care of her."
"I will." My voice cracked. I took a deep breath. "I will always keep her safe. Always."
JAMIE
I ran into the room, heart pumping.
