Words.
Flying out like endless rain into a paper cup…
Slither away from him. He watches them flee, away across the universe.
His curious hand tries to catch them but his fingers close on emptiness, just touching breath sighing from parched lips.
Underneath his head, pooling blood soaks into bare earth; he thinks he can hear it moving, over jumbles of sound that his addled brain cannot process – Sam's voice, the susurration of wind through dead grass, the thudding of his labouring heart.
Strong hands gather him up. Pain; then relief sweeps him away.
