I Lived When I Met You and Died When I Lost You

The sun is bright and there is not a cloud in the sky to block its light. I close my eyes and feel its warmth on my face. The deep green leaves of the trees rustle on the slight breeze and the occasional bird alights on a branch before flying off again. Just another perfect day...

I hate it. All of it...

They want me to...to lead them? The new country...... They're even naming it after the army that won its peace... Atreides... Named after you.

No, I tell them. I don't want to, can't. I can't lead a whole country...

They try to persuade me, but I'd long since made up my mind. You're somewhere out there. I know it. I feel it in my heart...

The boulder stands ominously in front of me. I step up to it and run my fingers along the "x" slashed across it. The rock is cold to the touch...but it holds no light to the coldness of my heart.

How long has it been, I wonder, since we left this place and our paths begin to diverge...

Where can you be, I wonder. Thousands of miles away in some exotic land, maybe? Or perhaps right under my nose... Having the time of your life or facing hard times? Maybe you're off somewhere trying to stop another war.

Have you forgotten about me? You couldn't have... At least, I hope you haven't... No, of course you didn't. We've been through so much, done too many things together for you to have forgotten me. You've been on my mind ever since that day we split apart. You're the only thing that had mattered to me more than the stupid war.

You're the only thing that matters to me now...

This is where our journey began an eternity ago. It will end here, one way or another. I will make sure of it, have to. And when I do, I shall wait until you can join me. Then we shall never part again.

The trees... So familiar. I remember when we had been here.

'The only escape is through this forest. Surely, the enemy knows that. They probably have an ambush all set up for us.'

You saved my life back then. My feet take me down the same path we had run so many months ago. As I run now, I remember... You'd been right. I'd be dead now, if it wasn't for you.

I walk to the edge of the cliff. The quiet rumble of the waterfall sounds in the distance. Down below, the river runs deep and fast. Those days after that, when I couldn't find you... They were some of the hardest in my life.

Those days after that, I realized how precious you were to me.

If we hadn't run that day, would things be different? If we had died during the attack, would the country still be plagued by war? Would destiny have found two more to take our place?

Wait for me... I'm almost there...

This is it. My mind's made up now and all I feel is peace. I'd survived the jump last time. This time, I won't. Just one more step and it's all over.

"Jowy!"

I turn my head to meet your earth-colored gaze. Have you come to see me off? That look in for eyes... Fear? For me? You have no need for that emotion anymore. Soon...very soon, it will be finished. I flash one last smile and take the last step.

I'll wait for you, Iianthe... For as long as it takes...

Until we meet again...

Goodbye, my love...
