Toph really did like her friends, but they all needed a break for a while, so they were all going on separate vacations (except for Zuko, who was too busy, and Sokka and Suki, who were staying together). That was why she was standing in the middle of the remains of a forest all alone. A few of the trees were not quite dead, but they were the lucky ones.

She had not chosen the place for good memories. She had not chosen it because it was some sort of spiritual place. She had chosen it because she was looking for something lost. Two somethings, in fact.

It was easier for Toph to find them than anyone else. She could feel the metal of the first one quite clearly, completely separate from the earth underneath it. Carefully, she walked over to it and picked it up from the ground. The metal boomerang was in rather good shape, considering the distance it had fallen. She Earthbent it back into its original shape as best she could.

Now, the other one had to be around here somewhere...

After a short while of searching, she found the sword. It had snapped from the impact, but she put the pieces next to each other and connected them again. Now it was whole.

"I got you a present!" Toph announced to Sokka the next time they met again. "Well, two presents."

"Really?"

"I just said so." She pulled the sword and the boomerang out of her pack and put them on the table. Vaguely, she could feel that Sokka had closed his eyes. "You can look now."

Sokka's mouth dropped open. "But that's – how – did you – is this?"

"I was in the area and thought I'd go see if I could find anything."

"Thank you!" Then she was in Sokka's arms, pulled against his chest. "I thought I'd lost them forever... it really means a lot to me, Toph."

She blushed a little. "You're welcome."
