A New Life

Chapter 1/Prologue

The sound of the train could be heard throughout the town, the smoke filling the air as it rode the tracks to the station in Colorado, Springs. People of all ages began to get off the train once it stopped, some were there to meet family and friends while others came for the scenery.

A young woman stepped down unto the three step stool, breathing in the fresh air before she finished stepping off the mini stairs and on to the ground. She made her journey to Co. Springs in hope of making a new life outside of Boston, Massachusetts. She loved Boston, but she wanted a new change, a new beginning in life. Grabbing the bottom of her light blue laced dress, she made her way to the telegraph office.

"Here you go, Sully," a tall man said to another in buckskin clothing.

"Thank you, Horace," Sully replied with a small nod.

"You're welcome," Horace said before looking at the young woman. "What can I do for you, miss?"

"I'm new here, and I was hoping you may know of a place to stay?" she asked with a smile. Her Boston accent coming through strongly.

"The Spring Chateau and Health Resort," Horace told her. "There's someone going there in a couple of minutes if you don't mind waiting?"

"Of course not. Thank you," she smiled again.

"You're welcome."

"Are you from Boston?" Sully asked after hearing her accent.

"Born and raised," she answered. "Have you ever been there, Mr...?"

"Sully," he said shaking her hand. "Yes, I have. My wife lived there also until she moved here."

"Ah" she nodded. "Well, it's good to know that I have something in common with someone who lives here. I hope to meet her."

"I'm sure you will. She's the doctor."

"A lady doctor? I admire those who try something different. Oh!" she shook her head. "Where are my manners? I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you my name. I'm Julia. Julia Smith."

Sully laughed softly. "You don't have to worry about manners with me, I don't judge on first impressions."

"Good to know," Julia smiled.

"Miss?" a young man spoke suddenly behind her.

Julia turned around and looked at the young man in a dark blue suit. "Yes?"

"Are you ready to go to the hotel?"

"Ah, yes, thank you." Looking back at Sully, she gave him another smile. "It was very nice meeting you, Sully. I must go and settle in now."

"Nice meeting you too, Miss Smith."

"Please call me Julia," she told him. "All of my friends do."

Sully nodded his head, smiling at her. "Have a nice day."

"You too," she replied, following the young man next to her, to the wagon that would bring her to the hotel until she was able to find a permanent place to stay. She took a seat, grabbing the side of the wagon, her green eyes glancing around once again. Her eyes starred at the mountain in front of her, she smiled to herself, knowing she would love it there.
