Lisa was sitting alone at a table in the Electric Diner accompanied by an untouched glass of orange juice and her new book when Hector walked in. He stood for a moment looking at her, before he went over and took the seat across from her. Lisa didn't even flinch.
"Hey, Lisa, how's the book?" Lisa looked up with a start, almost falling out of her chair.
"Oh! I didn't see you there!" She commented.
"I take it it's a good book, then." Hector said with a smile. Lisa matched his.
"Yeah." She agreed. "So what's up?"
"Actually, I came because I need some advice." Hector said. Lisa stuck a bookmark in between the pages of her book, closed it, and focused on Hector. "Well, I came to you because you are, well, a girl, and it would be awkward asking Jessica, an-" Lisa cut him off.
"I understand. Keep going."
"Thanks," he said gratefully. "Well, there's this girl that I like, and I really want her to know I like her, but I'm not sure how to tell her. I don't want to freak her out, because she's not quite my age."
Lisa pictured one of the girls she had seen before on campus. That made sense, she thought, because she was a little over two years older than Hector. "I honestly don't think you'll freak her out. Girls aren't like that. A lot of girls feel really nice when a guy tells then that." Lisa said with a smile.
"Thank you, but how do I tell her?" He said anxiously.
"There are a few different ways. If you wanted to be subtle, flirting works, but is not always effective, and some girls don't like flirts. Hmmm." Lisa lapsed into her own thoughts. Hector waited patiently. "I think it really depends on the girl. Take for example, me. I don't like flirting. I think love should be more…affectionate. Have you ever thought of kissing her?" Hector turned red.
"Um, yeah, I've thought of kissing her. I never imagined doing it in real life, though."
"Well," Lisa said encouragingly, "Give it a try. Let me know how it works out!" She stood up and pushed in her chair. She was about to leave when Hector grabbed her shoulder and wheeled her around. Lisa giggled. "What?"
"Thanks." He said.
"Oh it was no probl-" Lisa started, but was cut off. Lisa had never kissed anyone before that moment. It was a strange feeling. For once in her life, she stopped thinking, as warmth swept through her bloodstream. She began to kiss him back as he ran his hand through her hair. Shivers ran down her spine, and she sighed. As the two stepped away, Lisa stared at her feet, her mind racing, filling in for all the thinking she had stopped doing.
"Lisa," Hector said, "It went really well."
