I Do Not Own Greek Mythology

The myths say that I threw Hephaestus off of Olympus. That is what the mortals believe, and that is what my fellow gods believe.

It is not the truth, but Zeus has forbidden me to reveal that it was he that threw my son of the mountain.

You see, Zeus fears my children, just as he fears me. It is why Ares is an Olympian, why Enyo and Eris, though minor, still hold important roles. It why he keeps Hebe close as a cupbearer. And he knows Eileithyia is too mellow to attempt a takeover.

It is why, when the son I gave birth to without him, the son he threw of the mount, returned to Olympus, he was made an Olympian.

Zeus fears the repeat of history.

When Uranus mistreated her children, his wife helped their children, the Titans, overthrow him. And when Kronos swallowed me and my siblings, it was our mother, his wife Rhea, that helped us overthrow him.

Three dynasties, Primordials, Titans, and Olympians.

Three kings, Uranus, Kronos, and Zeus.

Three queens, wives, and mothers, Gaia, Rhea, and I, Hera.

But only two betrayals.

Zeus fears the day I bring the third. This is why he fears my children, why he no longer comes to our bed, and why, after Hephaestus, he has forbidden me to create another child myself.

Because he knows that he's wronged me, and that I long for the day Zeus falls.

I wonder if anyone else has realized that both Zeus' grandmother and mother helped their children overthrow his grandfather and father. It would explain why he seeks the warmth of other beds, especially if he fears history repeating. It also explains why, out of Hera's five children, the most powerful is made an Olympian, as is the one she made herself. Thefact that they're her only sons also probably has an influence.
