Lover of Auburn

Flying solo took on a whole new meaning once I left Max for a little while. I just had to get out, see the world and such. I got a life to live. Might as well start it somewhere far away from my oppressive leader. Not like she was a bad leader. Just a harsh one. She was brutal, but that was why I had liked the girl.

So I was just watching the ground when a flash of bright red caught my eye. I was going too fast to even pause, so I dipped one wing lower and wheeled around to pass again, wanting to see whoever possessed the mane of bright auburn.

She was just walking with a gym bag in one hand and a phone pressed to her ear in the other. She wasn't going too slow, but slower than I would've liked.

I dove downward and pulled another hard turn until I was able to land behind her and tuck my wings to my back tightly without her noticing, but I was stumbling enough to make a lot of noise.

She turned, the phone snapping shut as she stared at me, emerald green eyes determining if I was a threat or not.

But she hadn't noticed the wings. That was a relief.

I had this thing with redheads. Lissa was just a good kisser. Compared to Max, she was amazing. And don't get me wrong, I loved Max, but they didn't have the same appeal. Max was on an emotional and spiritual level with me. We were connected in a deeper way. But Lissa had the body and she was just all around beautiful. Max: depended on the day and whether she was covered in blood or not.

"Can I get a name?" asked the girl with the fiery mane; her stare was cold as ice, but somewhat approving. I guess I had picked a good day to find a public shower down by the beach.

"Nick," I said. Fang was kind of an instant turn off. Who would look at a guy named Fang and not automatically think 'He's nothing but trouble'? That's right. No one would. And Nick just kind of came. An alias is an alias.

"Okay, Nick," she said, putting one hand on her hip after returning her phone to her pocket. "How about you tell me the truth?" Her eyes glowed a faint pink.

"Fang," I said, somewhat afraid of this girl now. She was...strange. Kind of in a good way. "And yours?"

"Gwen Tennyson." She stared at me hard. I felt like flinching under her emerald eyes. "Now get out of here." She turned, hair swishing over her again, hiding her face and features from my sight. "I have a boyfriend."

Damn. So close. And she was hot, too.

I let out a long sigh. "So you won't even give me a chance? I-"

"Boyfriend," she repeated. "Now scram before I have to call him. He's a big guy. I wouldn't want to run into him in a dark alley if I were you, Fang."

I grimaced before snapping my wings out again. "Adios then, Red," I said before taking off, seeing her whip around, auburn locks flashing like fire in the glistening sunlight. I stared down at her for a long moment, a silent prayer hanging in my heart that maybe something new could be more important than her boyfriend.

She didn't look up. Seeing me gone, the girl began to head off, opening her phone once more. "Hey, Kevin," she said as she waltzed off, disappearing from my view.

I hung in the air a little bit. Damn. That Kevin was a lucky guy.
