A/N: This is what happens when I'm in one of those thoughtful, musing moods and start listening to classical music. Not really my usual fare, but I had to get it out there. Let me know what you think.

They had always been connected. Since the first moment their eyes had met, there had been a spark. Not of romance or passion, but of understanding.
Balance.
Through the years, their relationship had changed. It had morphed into something unrecognizable and back again a hundred times.
Some of their days were filled with the ease of two people who have known each other for a lifetime. Others brimmed with anger and hatred. Most of the time, they were angry at the world for being such a fickle, cruel place but sometimes the anger was directed inward.
Even though the scenes that lived behind their eyes were beyond their control, they felt a heavy weight of responsibility. But no matter what the cause of the anger, it evolved into hate. And the hate took on a life of its own, lashing out at the nearest living, breathing being.
One might think that there was a limit. That there was only so much a person could take. Only so much a person could give without caving inward and collapsing. And yet, defying all the rules, they were still there. Day after day, night after night.
Long ago, they had concluded that it was that spark that kept them sane. The understanding of what it was like. The compassion when the understanding disappeared, which was bound to happen because personally, they were opposites. But none of it mattered, because even when there were no words to be said, there was the unwavering balance between them.
