Elicit Garden

The dark and sullen pavement, lit by the morose streetlight gently hovering above received a visitor in the midst of a

gloomy midnight. Her steps, glum in sound, were a break from the ominous evenness that surrounded the street corner. The

moon engulfed the vacant night sky. Returning from her lover's apartment building with her hands in the pockets of her bell-

bottom jeans, she let her gaze remain on the floor beneath her. She watched her sneakers shuffle in front of her, one after the

other; an indistinct whisper clasped in the breeze was transported to her ears. The callow girl turned around with a sharp gasp
and wide eyes to find that no one was behind her. She shifted her head to the left and right to see if anyone was there when a

small garden on a brick stoop caught her eye. The pink carnations and yellow daisies besides the corroding baked clay gave

a contrast to the area, flamboyant in its own simplicity.

Sarah leaned into the small garden that pulled her in with its occult beauty. Somehow, the isolation inside her subsided and

was replaced by a warm loving sensation. She gazed into the pink carnation, her eyes meeting with the petals as it called her

name. A short breeze swept the petals, causing it to flaunter in the air; water beads dripping from the edges of the pink

velvet-like petals and falling on the ground making a rich sounding splash. Her blue eyes were locked into the flower, unable

to separate from it. Captivated by the plant, she made a move to pick it from its plot, to pluck it from where it grew.

The carnation mirrored her emotions, overwhelmed and oversized. Her gentle hands cupped around the wet supple pink

bud glazed with dew. The flower almost seemed to cuddle against the loving palms of Sarah. She had not felt love like this in

a very long time, too long in her opinion. She gently picked up the flower from the small garden and held it in her hands,

observing it, taking a deep appreciation for the flower that grew from the dirt in a disheartened area.

Sarah pulled herself up from the green plastic tray where the flower was being contained and held the carnation close to

her chest as she continued to walk down the street with a smile across her face. Serene, she was now looking forward with

glee in her heart for she was picked by a young flower in the garden.
