They moved like molasses in her old classes. Most days, she dreamed of other, better things, of Simon of Mother and Father, and kept one ear out for a teacher's question.

Now, they move so fast they leave her behind and when she cannot crawl, they drag her kicking and screaming and wailing and begging.

-

Nononononono

The words are right there, right in her throat, but she can't reach them because they've cut into her, are cutting deeperdeeperdeeper.

They're cutting tootoofar and so she hides where they can't get her, where no one can get her

(except for maybe simon and he's always been safe)

They teach her the simplicity of a gun, the dance like qualities of a sword, and the stealth of poisons.

They do not tell her how it feels to know that one day, everything is reduced to being a lifeless object.

The miracle of death.

They do not teach her to cope.

-

"Do you dream, River?"

"Inanimate objects don't dream. They exist."

(because if she tells them she dreams, they'll take those away too.)
