The Sorting Hat was an old being. Older then the school itself some say. The Sorting Hat wasn't always a Hat you know. No, the Sorting Hat was just a normal regular hat until four magical beings, two wizards and two witches, decided to infuse an old dusty hat they found on the side of the road with parts of there magic to help them.
These four where Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin...the founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
They wanted something unbiased that would sort the children that would attend the school fairly. So, after trial and error they decided to infuse something with all four of there magic's and they decided on a hat.
Godric gave the hat the ability to speak in order to announce the house and to become friends with the child...sorta.
Helga gave the hat the ability to know without a doubt the students loyalty...to themselves or others?
Rowena gave the hat the ability to be one with magic, know what flowed through the ripples of space and time. To understand the students magical level and maturity.
All these sounds great, but Salazar gave it the best ability of all.
Free Will. Salazar gave the magical hat the ability to act on itself, to think on itself.
Combined, the founders created the single most important magical artifact to the known world...The Hogwarts Sorting Hat which sorts every child every year.
So, next time you talk to the Hat why don't you tell it thank you for sorting you? Cause, thanks to Slytherin, it could of refused.
