Ablaze

Part One – The Lovers

I wanted to scream out in fury, and terror and just pure hatred. I wanted to reach for her, to pull her towards me and keep her safe from everything. The Capitol, their inhumane games… But I was powerless, I couldn't move.

She turned slowly to face me, her beautiful gray eyes stormy with suppressed pain. But underneath the pain, an undying flame of passion. Unyielding determination and loyalty. I had always admired that in her, always will love her spirit. Even when she says the words that break my heart.

"You promised. Please, keep it, for my sake… I- I'm sorry." She barely stutters out. But her words echo in the square, louder in the hushed silence.

Then she turns and walks towards the stage, our hands separate and I'm still engulfed in shock, still unable to move. My usual ability to inspire people with my words disappeared in an instant, nausea takes it's place and I can barely stand.

Nobody stops her. They must have felt the same way I did, unable to believe the results of the reaping. Haymitch had even dropped his bottle of liquor as the realization dawned on all of us, 'so this was the Capitol's plan all along'.

Anybody could tell she was struggling to appear brave and unaffected while walking onto the stage. I hated seeing her like this, but I knew I couldn't protect her, not even if I gave her my life. Because this time, the male tribute wasn't me. It was her best friend.

And during these Games, I couldn't even help her.

Because I had just promised her that I'd save Gale.

Sorry for the awful name of this story. The names of all the fanfics in this section have something to do with fire… it's almost sad.

The idea for this story just happened to pop into my head today. I probably won't actually write out this story, I mean, the idea isn't logical at all, but it just wouldn't leave me alone until I typed this up. Feel free to use the idea if you want. Just send me a link to your story and credit me 'kay?

Ideas, questions, suggestions, flames? I'm open to everything, just review.
