You stare at her from across the classroom. Why does it always seem like you stare at her? As hard as you try to forget her, you can't. One mistake was all it took to end your friendship, and you know that her hurt expression will haunt you forever.

One year has passed since you, Riley Matthews, have destroyed the friendship between your best friend, Maya Hart. You shift in your seat to get a better look at Maya. She giggles at something her new friend had whispered to her, and she links her arm with the girl who had whispered to her.

A surge of jealousy goes through you. All you can think is that that girl should be you. No one should be able to make Maya laugh besides you. In the back of your mind, you know you are being ridiculous, but you can't help it. You miss Maya horribly.

You pick up your things and walk out of the classroom, unable to bear seeing Maya smile at the girl. A voice calls behind you to stop as you race out of the high school. Instead of stopping, you run faster. Your shoes crunch against the grass as the voice continues to call out to you.

"Riley, wait!" the voice calls.

Finally, you run into Central Park. Quickly, you climb a tree before the voice reaches you. Those rock climbing classes finally showed some use. You sit in the tree, waiting in silence for the owner of the voice appears.

Familiar blonde hair appears below the tree you are hiding in. Maya heaves heavily and looks around, tears in her eyes. You feel a lump in your throat as Maya slumps her shoulders in defeat. The same girl who stole her from you runs up to Maya. The girl stops beside Maya.

She puts a hand on Maya's shoulder, and Maya looks at her with a sad look. The girl wraps Maya in a protective hug, and she looks up into the tree. She sees you and glares menacingly. You glare back, but the girl had already started leading Maya away from you.

Your head slumps against the tree, tears streaming down your face. The girl had taken Maya away from you. It's not like she really is yours now. Riley Matthews, the problem solver, couldn't even solve her own problems. What cuts you to the core, though, is that Maya wants to become friends again, but you keep on pushing her away.

You lost the only person who understands you. No matter how much you would like to say that this is the best for both of you, you know you are wrong. Maya needs you as much as you need her. In your heart you know that Maya could never be replaced.

If only small things like jealousy stopped getting in your way, maybe, just maybe, you might be able to fix your friendship. Why did you hurt Maya that night is the question that is always lurking in the back of your mind. You kissed your best friend's date on your prom night because you, Riley Matthews, are jealous of people taking Maya away from you.

All you have to do is apologize to get Maya back. Two words can make Maya yours again. Why don't you say them? Well, obviously you aren't sorry. You're supposed to be her best friend, and you aren't sorry for hurting her. I guess you'll just have to live with that, won't you?

You feel the sobs wracking your body lessen as the sky becomes darker. People covered in shadows flit across Central Park, most likely going home or to parties. You know you are being selfish to not apologize for what you did to her. Finally, you leap out of your tree. Nothing can stop whatever is going to happen next. You heft your backpack onto your shoulders and walk out of Central Park.

Your thoughts consume you as you walk back into the bright city. You messed up, Riley. You kissed Maya's date during prom. You'll never forget how Maya caught you. She had left to grab you a cup of water. Once she was gone, you asked the boy if he thought you were cute. He had said yes and said that Maya was beautiful, too. Of course, that got you to become jealous again. You had kissed him, and the worst part was hearing a cup of water drop behind you as you kissed the boy.

Dreadfully, you turned around and saw Maya standing there in shock. The look of hurt and betrayal in her eyes made you want to cry, but you didn't. Instead, you let Maya walk up to you and demand answers. Of course, you had none.

You're heart beat faster and faster as Maya looked into your eyes, trying to find a good explanation for why her best friend had kissed the boy she went to prom with. Your heart breaks when the look in her eyes becomes broken, maybe even shattered. What you regret more than watching your friend break right before you? Letting Maya run away from you. You had just watched her run away from prom with tears in her eyes. You would regret not running after her for the rest of your life.

Snapping out of your thoughts, you find yourself in a parking lot. The sound of a car makes you turn around. As you turn to the noise, you see the headlights of a car head right towards you. All instincts tell you to get away from the car, but it was to late to run. The car was speeding towards you with incredible speed. As the car shoves you back into the brick wall across the parking lot, one thing flashes in your mind before you black out. The only thing you see is Maya smiling at you. As your vision darkens, you hear a scream.

"Riley!"

Funny, they even sound like Maya.
