Why am I doing this?
The thoughts raced in my head as I flew through the air. I didn't really know any more. I didn't know why I was on the battlefield, why my earlier white fur now was stained by red blood. I was sure there was a good reason. I'm sure of it...
-Stop it, please, stop it!
That voice, that angelic voice. Now I remember. They had wanted to hurt her, had wanted to use her, and I couldn't allow it. But why, why was it that I cared? The ground hit my back as I landed on it again. Disoriented I got up, tried to focus on my enemy. Everything was spinning, my paws stumbled on themselves as I tried to move forward. I heard how they laughed, and her voice again. She was begging them to stop, telling them that she'd do whatever they wanted if they just let me be. I purred a bit, happy knowing that she cared that much about me. Then I saw them shifting their focus from me onto her. I roared, making some of the smaller ones run away, but the stronger ones just laughed, knowing I hadn't got much strenght left.
-You have to leave now, I'll protect you!
My dark voice was stronger than I felt, and she looked at me with her big, black eyes. Her purple fur glittered in the sun and I fell in love with her again. Looking into my eyes she seemed to understand my feelings, she seemed to understand that I'd give my life to protect her. And I could see in her eyes that she'd never leave my side. I knew that if I didn't protect her here and now the Granbull's would take her, force her purity out of her, and probably kill her once they were finished. I knew that the battle would probably mean my death, as my legs wobbled from the loss of blood. I also knew that I'd have to take them all with me, because otherwise the surviving Granbull's would approach my beloved Delcatty again, and then I wouldn't be there to protect her. My paws spread on the ground as I once again got into attacking position. The Granbulls looked at me, even they knowing the battle was lost for me, and they raised their hands to attack. It was quick. My claws penetrated their thick skin easily, their fangs burrowed easily into my body, and then we pulled away from eachother, all of us falling down. I panted, blood was pouring from my wounds. Luckily I had managed to hurt them just as bad. Delcatty rushed to my side, her soft nose touching my cheek.
-Why did you do it?
Her voice was sad. I didn't want her to cry, I wanted to comfort her, but my strenght was fading.
-Because...
I panted, every movement caused me pain.
-I love you. I always have.
She licked my wounds, tried to comfort me, tried to keep me alive, but it was in vain. With every breath I drew I could feel my life fading away, and I wanted to tell her it would be alright, but I couldn't muster enough strenght.
-Persian, please don't go, don't die, I don't want to lose you.
I lifted my paw and placed it on hers, collecting what little energy I had left.
-Don't worry, my beloved. As long as you remember me, I'll still be alive. I'll still be watching over you, protecting you. Don't forget about me.
My eyes closed and I felt my last breath leave me. She cried out in pain, she cried out for me, cried out for the love she had lost, for the childhood friend she would never meet again. And tears fell from her eyes, but I knew from where I was watching over her that there would come a time when she once again would smile and laugh, when she once again would find love. I knew, because I would make sure of it, as her new guardian angel.
