APOLOGIES
The apartment floor is empty save for the redheaded man pounding furiously at a door towards the end of the hall.
"Cloud!"
"Cloud, dammit, open the door!"
Silence.
A heavy sigh.
"I will call Kunsel and have him pick this lock, do you understand me? Open the-"
The door is opened just enough for him to peer in the room. A pair of sad baby blues hidden beneath a mass of blond spikes are staring back at him.
"Look, I said I was sorry, okay? C'mon, chocobo." Maybe the pet name will work. "I-"
"How do I know I can believe you this time?"
More silence.
"That's what I thought." There is anger in the blond's voice, but it's the pain hidden beneath those words that cuts Genesis to the quick.
He puts his foot in the doorframe before Cloud can shut the door again.
"Please, Cloud? Just let me in. Please…"
His tone is pleading. Genesis doesn't think he's ever sounded like this before.
But it works, because now he's sitting in the other male's living room, fingers tapping out a nervous rhythm on the arm of the sofa as Cloud paces back and forth in front of him.
Neither of them can look each other in the eye.
"What do you want me to say, Genesis? That I don't mind it when you spend the weekend with Zack and ignore my calls?" He looks like he's about to cry. "This isn't the first time, either."
Genesis moves to interrupt, but the blond holds up a hand, silencing him.
"No." Yellow spikes sway side to side as he shakes his head. "I know you, Genesis. You're still in love with him."
"Cloud, it's you that I-"
"Just stop it, okay?" Cloud turns away, hands fisted at his sides. "Zack already told me." A derisive snort. "At least one of you has a conscience."
Genesis pales a little, the reprimand catching him off guard.
It shouldn't hurt this much.
"I only went to end things with him! Yeah, we…Things got a little out of hand, but I never fucked him." The redhead takes a deep breath to steady himself. "I couldn't." All I could see was you. It wasn't the same.
Cloud moves toward the door as Genesis gets up off the couch and takes a step towards him. "He's my best friend…I thought I could trust you."
The rest of the statement remains lingering in the air, unsaid. I thought I could love you.
And Genesis can feel his heart breaking when the first tears roll down the blond's cheeks.
There is no resistance from the smaller man when he takes him in his arms, brushing tears away with his fingertips and cradling the trembling body against him. "Baby…baby, shh…"
They both knew there'd be obstacles to face when they started this relationship, if it could even be called such. Cloud's insecurities and Genesis' lingering feelings for his old lovers remain a constant thorn in their sides.
Genesis has to repress a bout of cynical laughter. More like a relation-shit.
"I really do mean it, Cloud. I'm sorry." He breathes in his scent and nuzzles into the man's hair. A sigh escapes the blond when he gingerly wraps his arms around the older male's waist.
It's an unhealthy addiction, but there's no stopping them now.
They know that no matter how many times they fight like this they'll always come back for more.
Even when Genesis' phone rings and Cloud kicks him out again, screaming at him to "get the hell out" and that he "might as well stay with that fucking silver-haired prick this time" they still know that he won't turn him away when he comes back.
He never does.
A/N: So I guess this I wrote this with an AU setting in mind…Oh, how I adore this pairing. The possibilities are endless. :)
