Disclaimer: I own nothing of the wondrous world of Merlin, or else there would be a season 6!

A/N: This is the first fanfiction I've ever wrote, so I'm excited and a little nervous to post it. I would greatly appreciate any advice, tips or constructive criticism from you guys! I've never really thought that I've got a knack for writing like some people do, but I figured that as long as I've got ideas, why not write them? I can only get better with time! This is the ending I always wished had happened at the end of season 5, not whatever they call that pot of misery stew known as the series finale. Anyways, on with the show! I hope you enjoy!

The Waiting Man

He was called the Waiting Man. Day after day, week after week, month after month, he sat, and he waited. Waited for what, though, no one knew. No one had wanted to ask. He would sit by that lake all day long, just waiting. No one ever saw him come or go; they weren't sure if he ever left. He never broke the silence, he never moved, except to occasionally run his hands, almost lovingly, through the water that lapped at his feet. There was an air of sadness, of suffering, about the man, and his too-old eyes in his too-young face had seen far more pain than most could comprehend. He never smiled, never laughed. He just, waited. Through the winter, when the snow turned his hair white and his lips blue. Through the spring, when the torrents of rain soaked his clothing and plastered his dark hair to his head. Through the summer, when the blistering sun turned his skin red and sent rivulets of sweat running down his back. Through the fall, when the leaves would pile up around him and the wind would whip them around his face. Through all of that, he sat. And he waited. He became as much a part of the landscape as the trees, the bushes, the lake. He was always there. It seemed as if he had always been there. Never moving, never speaking, just waiting. Waiting, waiting. Nothing ever changed. He would stare into the lake, stare for hours, unblinking, as if its waters held the thing he waited for. But it was always the same. Day after day, he continued his silent watch. One day though, one day, everything wasn't the same. For the first time, someone had joined him by the lake. And for the first time, the Waiting Man smiled.

Well? Thoughts, concerns, advice? Reviews are greatly appreciated! I will read every one of them, I promise! I didn't realize how short this was until I typed it up, but I hope it was worth the read. I mean it, thank you, really, for taking the time to read this. It means a lot.
