He heard singing. Suddenly, the sled shuddered and bucked and Jonas and Gabriel were thrown into the air. As Jonas fell, he moved Gabriel to his back so he wouldn't feel the impact. This is the end, Jonas thought. He hit the ground with a sickening crack and Gabriel was launched into the air again! The explosion of pain in Jonas's back was ten times worse than the broken leg memory. He groaned as he crawled as fast as he could toward Gabriel. "Please don't be dead! Please!" Jonas cried. Gabriel's eye lids fluttered a little which gave Jonas a reason to cry with relief before he blacked out.

When he came to, Jonas was in a white room with no furniture except for the bed he was laying on, a tube connecting to his hand, and a baby's crib near the corner. He tried to get out of bed, but was strapped in. he knew what was in the basket. "Gabe, you're alive!" Jonas said quietly. His back still ached, but not as much now. Right as he broke through the first strap, a woman walked in wearing a white lab coat. "Good. You're awake. My name is Merrisa. I'll be taking care of you until you're spine is healed."

"Where am I?" asked Jonas in a feeble voice.

"You're in hospital room 1219," replied Merrisa, "and don't struggle with that strap. It will only make it tighter."She started to fumble with a contraption that was putting a white liquid into his hand."This is called an IV. It puts the medicine right into your blood, making you heal faster," she said seeing the look of puzzlement on Jonas's face. "Oh and I almost forgot," she exclaimed, "You have visitors!"

"Who is coming?" asked Jonas. He didn't know anyone here so who would show up.

Right then, another woman walked into the room. She not only had the same color eyes as Jonas, but the same hair color as him, too. "Hello Jonas. I am Joan, your mother," said the woman, "And I see you brought your brother, Gabriel, here safely." She moved toward Gabriel's sleeping form.

"Stop! Don't touch him!" Jonas shrieked. He didn't know what to believe. How could she be his mother? And how could Gabriel be his brother? It didn't make sense

Merrisa move toward Joan and whispered something that sounded like "Is his father coming?"

"Yes, right after he delivers the message," Jonas's mother said.

Suddenly, a man walked in. He was dressed in a white tunic, just like the one he was wearing at the sledding misfortune. The man's face seemed oddly familiar, like an old recollection, thought Jonas.

"And here's your father, Jonas," Jonas's mother announced. The man stepped into the light and it was the person Jonas was desperate to see.

The Giver shifted and then broke into a wide grin. "Welcome back to the Community, Jonas."
