I was inspired to write this after watching the new movie. This is my take on the scene 'A Little Fall of Rain'.

Somewhere Flowers Grow

He saw her now. Huddled against the barricade, pressing something against her stomach.

"'Ponine? What are you doing here?"

Out of fear for her safety his words sounded almost harsh, but they invoked a smile from her.

He looked closely at where she held her stomach, and frowned. Crouching in front of her, he carefully teased away her hands. Her face convulsed with pain, but she smiled through it as his hands touched hers.

It was then that he saw the blood. And he knew. He knew that she was wounded. That she had been there during the fighting. That she was dying.

And it was raining.

"'Ponine…"

"Don't fret, Marius," she said in a weak voice. Something glistened on her cheeks. Sweat? Tears? Rain?

"Hold me close!" her words twisted his heart. He sat next to her and gathered her body into his arms. "I don't feel any pain – just the rain, and that never hurt anybody before."

"You won't die," Marius' knew that she could not live – but he wanted to keep her from knowing the truth. "If I could close your wounds with words of love, then I would."

Her face became incredulous. The words that she had dreamed he would one day say to her had finally been voiced. And she was happy.

She was in a dream. The past was a shadow, the present a dreamy existence that she had many a time imagined when she had been on her own – and the future, a dreamy hope.

"Rain," she whispered weakly through her smiles as the drops trickled down her face, "will wash away the past. I will sleep in your arms – just like I've dreamed so many times before."

She sank against his body.

"Just keep me safe," she said as she closed her heavy eyes.

"I'll keep you close," Marius promised.

"And the rain," Ponine whispered happily, "will make the flowers grow."

Her words were of hope. Words that spoke of better times! Marius found himself repeating her words – as if the thought of flowers was a promise that not all was death and despair.

"And rain will make …"

"Will make," Eponine whispered smilingly, "the flowers …"

"Grow …" Marius finished.

Eponine fell silent.

And then he knew.

He knew that she had said her last words, breathed her last breath, felt her last pang of pain, her last drop of rain.

Somewhere 'Ponine was where there was no rain.

No fighting.

No despair.

No death.

No tears.

She was far from this place.

And the rain mingled with his own tears.

It was then that he felt the rain.

But somewhere there was hope.

She had given him hope.

Hope and courage!

His heart ached.

His head ached.

A chill swept through his body.

But somewhere, flowers were growing.
